  • Claxton, Lloyd

    11/19/2010 09:40 AM

If I and the rest of Americans and their families have to balance our checkbooks and struggle, so should you the government. If you don't have the money, you can't spend it. I am sick and tired of your pet projects, petty bickering and endless and reckless spending going on, while Americans are struggle to make ends meet. I can't afford your never ending spending habits and tax bill. Like taking candy from a child. The answer is NO! You have to learn NO MORE EARMARKS!

  • Perham, Susan

    11/17/2010 02:40 PM

Earmarks entice legistators to vote for bad bills that do cost taxpayer "big bucks". Valid projects attached to the big spending bills should stand on their own merits.

On perhaps an unrelated note, something needs to be done to stop the practice of "gerrymandering". Congresional voting districts should be based on established political units, such as counties - not configured to ensure the relection of incumbents.

  • Misker, Britton

    11/17/2010 12:34 PM

    No Earmarks!
If a project is important enough to require funding, then it deserves it's own bill.
That way it will stand or fail on it's own merits.
We cannot afford to have someones pet project to be attached to a "must pass" bill.
I hear that earmarks "ONLY" amount to one percent of the national budget. Well, I would welcome a one percent raise. And remember ONE PERCENT of a TRILLION DOLLARS is nothing to sneeze at!

  • Bates, Lawrence

Today, the number of people in the population who have come to see that our country and our way of life are under full blown attack from both without and within, are at an all time high. What is not generaly recognized is that this has been going on for decades.
Our elected representatives are no better at recognizing this than the average American citzen and so they are quickly subborned into the criminal class that we still today, hesitate to recognize in our Washington DC "ruling class".
The votor has a memory horizon of sadly only about 18 months. Make no mistake about it! This short attention span is the problem that is destroying the America we thought we knew. It IS our fault! The blame can be layed no where else with honesty.
How many of us remember when there was no such thing as "earmarks". Does anyone remember the housebanking scandal?
Our national memory of facts which have been brought out in just the time since The Obama White House began is fading alread. Facts such as congress being exempt by their own hand from so many federal laws that the rest of us must live in compliance with. Think Obama Care- exempt, keeping their checkbooks balanced and writing no bad personal checks - exempt, obeying the rules of the House and Senate - exempt unless you happen to be the one the Administration has decided to throw under the train, following most federal laws - exempt unless you're in the minority party or have stepped on some very large toes.
This has been going on mostly behind the scenes for decades but is now coming out into the open.
Believe me, this will just continue to get worse until our Nation is utterly destroyed, unless we votors decide to wake up and remember the bad dreams we've been having.
Get a notebook or start a file on your computer to record for future reference, what evils your legislative representatives have been caught in. You won't hear much on the nightly news about these things. Actively search out alternate news sources and keep up with the ones you trust. Then go back and study it before each election no matter how large it's gotten.
Above all actively fight for term limits. It will be an uphill battle. You will be setting yourself against some of the nations most entrenched political criminals, but we must win this, or our country is lost.

    STOP EARMARKS NOW !!

    HELP SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS !

TAKE NOTE: It was reported that in our last mid-term elections that the seniors 65 + .. made up the majority of the voters.

RAISING THE AGE OF SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS TO LATE 60'S AND 70 ~ It should not be the answer to our financial crisis. For those who are still doing manual labor jobs, does anyone know how they can continue? .. Most don't have a desk or sit-down job. Do you really think that they will be hired in the first place with this job market and younger employees being preferred ? ... GET REAL !

NO COST OF LIVING RAISES FOR SENIORS THESE PAST TWO YEARS - What a shame! ... It was such a minuet amount but better than nothing. Has anyone seen a senior in a grocery store that can't deviate one iota from her grocery list or they will not be able to buy medicine? I have witnessed that! They are having to choose between food and medicine for survival !

WHO STOLE FROM THE "SOCIAL SECURITY TRUST FUND" ?? ... Shame on our govt ! ... Seniors paid into the fund and they are ENTITLED to receive benefits !!

WHY IS IT THAT WHEN WE HAVE A FINANCIAL CRISIS .. WE ALWAYS THINK OF THE SENIORS FIRST ? ... Well, because I guess they see them as too weak and helpless to even put up a fight over this injustice. We are just hoping that they will die and get out of our way !

WHEN WILL CHARITY BEGIN AT HOME ?? ~ Obviously not in America. I am all for giving to charitable organizations around the world to help the impoverished, sick and dying but I think we will be held accountable for NOT taking care of our own.

(and thank God for the 'freedom of speech amendment' .. hope we can keep it!)

  • hope, samantha

    11/17/2010 08:57 AM

We have to keep our check book balanced and so should our country. We may want to buy something or pursue something that might even help others but if we do not have the funds then we need to be patient and wait until a more appropriate time. My expectation of the govt. is the same expectations they have for me.

Isn't there some sort of an emergency freeze on anything going thru this lame duck session , when the nation has already shown , they totally oppose all the policies , that have already been crammed our way , ( some even sent thru without notice , some still UNKNOWN < When the cries of our Nation is "Take Our Nation Back " is heard coast to coast and from our troops abroad (the few who were allowed to get their vote counted ) . Which amounts to this administration giving our service men and women a warm smile and the finger ... At the same time that our borders to the south are being compromised , and this administration is opposing Citizens for defending , the very land that is The USA. Worried about spending sure , more worried that our Nation is being attacked from with in as such this lame duck time .... Well Look at the pattern of what has been done , the way it has been done .... look at the deceits that have taken place and tell me what the future actions will be by the same people IF left free to do as they want before they are actually kicked out of power ???? If it walks like a DUCK and Quacks like a Duck ....BEWARE .. when your the fish under the water, in the pond on which the Duck is floating .. , Their hungry ducks and were the fishes , they don't care which fish they eat , or which one's they poop on , .ITS NOT OUT OF CONTROL SPENDING <<<ITS AN OUT OF CONTROL Administration and their friends,ITS NOT just our money its our FREEDOMS and Rights .

What frustrates me is when I hear so called Conservatives say that earmarks represent such a small fraction of what must be cut in order to bring our fiscal house in order that we should just leave them alone. To that I answer with Confucius, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Start with earmarks, and eventually arrive at a Federal government the size of the US Constitution. However, we must take that first step.

  • Erlewein, David

Stop Earmarks and lets have term limits in the house and senate, the same as the President.

  • Dangar, Dana

We can't afford earmarks at home with our personal finances, so they should NOT be allowed in Wasington. Let every idea be voted on it's own merit. Enough excuses, it's time for REAL RESULTS !!!!!

If your "pet project" is of true value then direct it through channels and perhaps group it together with other like projects and bring it to the floor and vote it up/down on its merits and affordability. Enough of the hiding bridges to nowhere inside truly necessary bills.

'Ear marks' leave the citizen tax payer completely out of the process.
If something is worthy of being enacted, then the sponsor should have no hesitance in bringing it to the floor for debate and subject it to an up or down vote. Let the 'light of day' shine upon it as well as us who ultimately have to foot the bill.

  • Akers, Richard

    11/16/2010 03:07 PM

i believe that earmarks should be a straight up vote for each project. No hidden agenda. I also believe laws should be no more pages than the U.S. Conctitution or so complex that individuals can"t understand them. "Ignorance ofthe law is no excuse." But we have people passing laws that don't even know what is in them.

  • reising, susan

    11/16/2010 03:01 PM

Please stop squandering the money of my children and grandchildren (who have not even been thought of), and, instead, try being fiscally responsible for a change. If November 2nd didn't teach you guys anything, it should have taught you all that you can be replaced the next election if you don't do as you promised. The voters' memories are getting much longer.

A lot of this money came out of Social Security and was used freely for their pet projects, never thinking how this would ruin the system. Both parties have to be held responsible and return the money, which, of course they can't. All of them have tremendous high salaries, with constant COLA additions, how about cutting those too.The projects have to be banned

  • Rodeffer, Thomas

    11/16/2010 01:47 PM

Earmarks are not only wasteful spending of taxpayer money. It is out of control, and it energizes the corruption in Washington. It should be done away with completely and forever. The money not spent in these earmarks should go towards the National debt reduction. Boehner should look at going back to budget year 2000, not 2008. All republicans need to come aboard on the permanet freeze of earmark, including Richard Shelby, whose noted for bring home the bacon in Alabama or he could be the next one axed out of a job with he comes up for re-election again. All projects should have there own separete Bill, so taxpayers can know where all the money is going; not hidden in spening bills as the Democrats did to the Military spending bills to skyrocket expenditures.

That $15 Billion is our Social Security money that we will receive less of.

Shouldn't one of the worlds largest Corporations, (the USA) have a budget they must stick to?

All Public employees (including Presidents, Senators, Reps, should be made to pass economics tests to qualify for the job.

    11/16/2010 12:26 PM

Okay, the mid term elections are over but we cannot sit down like the battle is won. It is not. We are just beginning - the earmarks DO have to go and anyone in government who wants them to stays needs to be examined throughly and voted out the next time around. I am tired of the haggling over our money, spending it wildly and then WE are in the poor house because the officials manipulated votes with our taxpayer money/earmarks. We NEED term limits. I am sick when I hear someone say they have been in the government 40 yrs - that is a sin! When their lives are examined, we find they have lied, cheated and stolen though the years. Get rid of them now. Term limits are critical! NO forever political positions. Get the current administration out so we can get someone in who has honesty, dignity, love for our country, and who has experience and I aleadership qualities. We don't need an orator, we need a President. Bush may not have been perfect, but he has good character, honesty, dignity. He never once slammed Obama and that is all Obama has done.

I want to be proud of my government again. If Obama is reelected, we will get what we deserve; a 3rd world country.

  • Slemp, June

    11/16/2010 12:15 PM

Please Oh Please! Do not get bogged down with making sure "his lordship" does not serve a second term!!! (Remember what that cost with the Bill Clinton mess) IF this congress will represent the people who sent them there and do what is needed to salvage our nation, then the people will take care of 2012.

  • Havard, Victor

    11/16/2010 11:48 AM

Define earmark. I disagree with pork barrel spending, but getting rid of earmarks will not reduce spending by one cent. Earmarks only specify how the money must be spent. To this - I am not opposed. The problem is when individuals put earmarks into the budget with no vote whatsoever which specify that money must be spent on worthless projects in their own states/districts. This is the practice which should be abolished.

I don't disagree that these types of earmarks should be banished, but I do disagree that congress does not have some control over how the budget it spent. I just thing that any earmarks should be given an up or down vote in the entire chamber and the majority rules.

    This is the best balance.

  • Needham, Mark

    11/16/2010 11:39 AM

I like Mitch McConnel but when it comes to ear marks he is slow to get the picture. Earmarks do represent a very small portion of the budget. However, many of the spending bills wouldn't pass if each of the Congressmen and Senators didn't have 'pet' projects funded in them using earmarks. Not passing these spending bills would be a huge improvement!

  • Captain Obvious

I signed--thank you, Governor Huckabee, for helping us send a BUNCH of good people to Washington who will be on board!

    Maxine, SALUTE! Huckabeans forever!!

  • Lilley,, Carolyn

    11/16/2010 10:49 AM

I just called Roy Blunt about his support of earmarks. His staff person explained that he was for earmarks, because at the end of the year there would be funds left over and he wanted to be sure that Missouri got its share of the funds; otherwise, Obama would have the say as to where they would be directed. I'm not sure that I understand completely this logic. I asked why there would be funds left for earmarks in the budget, if we are so in debt...shouldn't any overage go to reducing the debt, not more spending? Am I wrong?

  • andrews, ginny

    11/16/2010 10:43 AM

Not only is the money a travesty, but the fact that these favors are used to "buy" votes is wrong. Earmarks turn every bill into a bunch of slop. there is no chance of debating these extras adequately. If earmark projects are such great ideas, create your own legislation for them.

  • Balasko, Charles

    11/16/2010 10:31 AM

How about this: agreed that earmarks in general should be illegal EXCEPT when inserted to apply to the national debt. Congressmen could take credit for earmarking sums of money to pay on the debt and have their names published to show the American people that they are fiscally responsible. Ancient Roman senators and politicians used to actually pay for public buildings, baths, monuments, etc. just so the people would know who funded certain construction projects for the public good. Their reward was public recognition and votes in their favor next election.

  • Richner, Perle

    11/16/2010 10:27 AM

I agree completely with Gov. Huckabee. $15 billion is not a drop in the bucket and to trim $15 B here and $15 B there soon adds up.
Thank you for this opportunity. I have expressed my thoughts but have been told it is such a small amount. Perhaps this way it will be taken seriously.

  • Marks, JB

    11/16/2010 10:21 AM

STOP the EARMARKS...and while your at it, Congress and the Administration needs to address taking a pay CUT to reduce the deficit. They are suppose to be serving the country while indeed they are taking exorbitant salaries and perks paid for by the taxpayer. Outrageous at best.

  • Bruner, Mary

    11/16/2010 09:58 AM

Congressmen and women who oppose earmarks do not want to give up their addiction to glory and power. For too long the system has allowed incumbents to build their personal power with constituents by bringing home presents at the expense of taxpayers across the nation. The incumbents have justified their actions by saying if their constituents have to help pay for bike trails in a far away state they should be able to get a museum in their state. Most of these projects should be funded by the states or by private enterprise or philanthropists. A few projects such as NASA which benefit all of the citizens of the USA should be funded by the federal government, but the funding should be discussed in open meetings and the spending for the projects should be voted up or down on the basis of the merit of the project.

Congressmen/women should not be able to tack these projects onto unrelated bills as amendments and sneak them through without anyone knowing the funding is hidden within the bill.

Earmarks and pork barreling are often used as bribes to get legislation passed! If Congressmen/women do not understand the message which was sent to all elected officials on November 2, 2010, perhaps they will understand better after the November election of 2012.

  • fMcFerran, Sandra

    11/16/2010 09:49 AM

It's not that the earmarks are so bad, in themselves - it's the way they get slipped into other TOTALLY UNRELATED bills and WE THE PEOPLE are not told/ask/advised - that WE THE PEOPLE have, without our knowledge, supposedly OKAYED some atrocious ridiculous offensive expense.
We need to start over. What is it the kids call out when they mess up?

Rev. Huckabee, when we council people who are in financial trouble, we often tell them to pay off their debt. This is done by starting with the smallest bill and then the next smallest bill. Their are certain things that make a bigger splash on the political scene(social security, health care, etc.) but by removing this "little" $15 billion earmark a big hole could be knocked in the $13 trillion that our children will have to pay back.
