President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

There will be an outcry from those on the right who will say that Obama's nomination, made two weeks into his Presidency, is impossible to justify but I think such an outcry will sound like right-wing whining. The better response is simply to allow those on the left to explain what he did in his first two weeks as President that merited such recognition.

It's not up to "the left" to explain why the award was given to President Obama; "the left" didn't make the award...

This is a cute quote from Kevin Jackson (Theblacksphere):

"Kanye's sure to interrupt Obama's Nobel acceptance speak, right? Beyonce deserved the "Peace Prize!"

  • Harper, Tim

Why couldn't he set a precedent and turn it DOWN! He knows that it is ludicrous and that there are much more deserving people who have done more than talk a good game, they have shown by action that they deserve it, it would be a classy thing to do.

I voted for Obama, but do not feel that he is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize at this point. However, Gov. Huckabee, I fail to see why any group other than the Nobel committee itself should feel obliged to explain the decision. It is hardly incumbent on "those on the left" to justify the award just because they otherwise support Mr. Obama or his policies.

Full disclosure: I used to be a Republican and voted for Bush. I am now an Independent and will never go back to the GOP. The Republicans have lost their minds and have become a party of selfish, greedy cranks and fanatics. What on earth does this prize have to do with right or left wing politics in the U.S? The Nobel Committee made the choice, not the American people and certainly not the DNC. Whether Obama "deserves" it is not really relevant. There is nothing more to say. The choice was made and no one asked Obama or Democrats to voter on it. So Republicans should take a breath and shut up before they make themselves look even more foolish than they already are. The GOP has completely lost a generation. Mr. Huckabee, why don't you get away from these fools before it is too late.

  • Fana, Alex

    10/09/2009 05:21 PM

Why can the Republicans just say "Congratulations Mr. President" whether he deserves it or not its up to the public and the media to decide, sometimes silence can be a powerful weapon.

  • Roche, Michael

    10/09/2009 05:19 PM

Why even make the Nobel Prize an issue at all? The Prize has nothing to do with America's Politics whether you are on the Left or Right. Let's get to America's business we have enough problems here to solve rather then whether or not President Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize or not.

  • Fana, Alex

I couln't agree more with this, I was a loyal republican for over 6 years and proud of it, until the party became a symbol of division and old rhetorics. Why doesn't eveyone just understand that these are not the old days, and that the republican party has to change their way of thinking and adapt a new strategy, people want to move on and be and strive for the same goals. A free, safe and proud America. Republicans are still seeing this a dull black and white world, and this needs to change to embrace things that are new and different even if they are not what we agree with or like. All it takes is to learn to deal with our differences and stop the "NO WAY, NOT ME. THIS IS NOT HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE" attitude. Huckabee you might have my vote.

    Thank you

Unfortunately, Mike, the world community wants nothing more than a weak, contrite America. And the Republican party is delighted to oblige.

The constant lying. (by getting us into the Iraq war to seek out WMD's)
The staggering arrogance. (by inviting terrorists to "bring it on.")
The dangerous narcissism. (by landing a on an aircraft carrier to declare a war is over that had only started)
The astounding incompetence. (by sending our economy into the worst collapse since the Great Depression)

Consistently, 20 percent of Americans claim to be Republicans -- the fastest decline of any political party in modern history. Americans know Obama best.

Let's continue to be bitter, angry and small minded and push ourselves further into the toilet.

Having a president who has won this prize can enhance American credibility and influence around the world. All American citizens should welcome such an endorsement. Why do Republicans and right leaning media choose to attack the award? I can only imagine it is because they want so badly for Obama and Democrats to fail and do poorly that they will say and do anything to pull them down - with the hope that more Republicans will succeed in the future against a beaten contender. We should instead all work together to build this country up, and leave it to our true enemies to try to discredit the prize winner.

I am surprised that anyone still thinks the "prize" is anything more than a mercurial joke.....what it is, and has been for decades now, has had virtually nothing to do with peace and everything to do with socialist politics....nothing new here.

Note to interested parties, as sent to my representative:

I just received from the Va Dept of Taxation a notice that I wanted to bring to your attention, not as much for my particular situation, which I prefer to work through normal channels if at all possible, but for the situation our commonwealth and nation are in.

First of all, a little background, though. My wife and I are both working full time jobs, raising a family of 5 children. We have met our obligations to the best of our ability through the recession, and intend to continue doing just that.

We own a rental property out of state. We had a primary residence out of state as well when we came back home to VA about 2 1/2 years ago. It took us several months to sell the primary residence. The rental property is currently rented, and still for sale. Since we have moved back to VA, we have made as much as 3 mortgage payments out of pocket, on time, many months over these years.

We have had to cash in my 401k to meet our obligations. There was some discussion by our elected officials about reducing or eliminating penalties for early withdrawal from retirement plans. As best we can tell, our representative government does not think we are having enough hardship yet. We have been assessed penalties for the early withdrawal from the 401k, and are working through the process of paying what we 'owe' the commonwealth and federal government. By the way, I cannot say that this would encourage me to reestablish any kind of retirement account with any government ‘help’ or strings attached to it. The cake looked and tasted good, but man, did it ever have an afterbite!

I am employed in the engineering and surveying field. Our industry has been hit very hard by the recession, as most of my peers can attest. Many firms are closing their doors and laying off staff. We have had a very limited workload, and could have probably justified closing the doors and filing for unemployment. I do not want to do that. I am able to work, and intend to continue doing just that as long as I am able. We had a nice garden this summer, and are doing all we can to be effective managers of all that we have been entrusted with. We also meet our obligations consistently, as our commonwealths tax records will show, among others.

Back to the notice that I mentioned earlier. This notice to my employer says that all my wages are subject to lien to pay my taxes assessed. I learned a saying when I was fairly young that I think you can apply to this situation. The saying goes ‘you can’t get blood out of a turnip’. You can assess all the taxes you want, but there really is a limited capacity to pay, at least here.

I look forward with great interest to your response, again, not just for my situation, but for the commonwealth and the nation.

    Sincerely,
    VA Engr

    I agree with you Mike.
I would rather hear what the reasoning is behind the decision to give him the award too.
It's kind of like someones red headed step child getting an award for putting the family cat in the microwave and setting it on high.

The award of the Nobel peace prize to Obama says more about the Nobel prize than it does about Obama. Apparently, the award has been given to him for his lofty rhetoric, because he has delivered no results to date. Rhetoric is what comes between thought and action and generally does justice to neither. In this case, no justice has been done.

People will tend to say Obama has done nothing to signify his worthiness of getting the Nobel Peace Prize. I beg to differ. If you will check out the United Nations Agenda 21, he has already put a lot of that into being. The smelt in Ca, Cap and Trade, Health Care being put before us, taking over private industries, banks, just to name a few. The United Nations was pushing him forward to promote their agenda. Information at http://recyclewashington.wordpress.com the article is Agenda 21,Sustainable Development. This is what America will look like, be like, if they have their way.

    Good advice Huck,

We shouldn't point out and mock the ridiculous nature of Obama getting this award and the possible message behind it. We shouldn't point out that Obama is Carter redux. Hell, we shouldn't criticize him at all. Maybe we should all have a jam session instead. Cause us conservatives are just too stupid to discuss how terrible Obama is AND select nominees for 2012. Good job Huck. We should all care how the leftist media portrays us because we all know fair and honest they are when we play along to get along. Right Huck? And yes, we all know the left will rush out to explain it. Like they did with Van Jones, Valerie Jarret, NAMBLA Czar, Tea Parties, and so forth. Get a clue. Really.

  • Houser, Jerry

    10/09/2009 03:22 PM

If you read why the President received the award, you will see that it is the hope that he has engendered for world peace. Besides, he was already drawing tens of thousands of people to his speeches in Europe long before he was elected. The award is surely earned.

  • Lindsay, Rick

    10/09/2009 03:20 PM

I know you are trying to present a "reasoned" viewpoint by suggesting to "the right" that they resist the temptation to raise an outcry over the awarding the the Noble Peace Prize to the President. But by then suggesting that they simply ask "those on the left to explain" why he won shows your comment to be disingenuous. It's not up to "the left" to explain anything, as they did not make the award. If anyone has a beef about the President being awarded the Prize, I suggest they direct their questions to the committee that made the award.

    one "prestigious" award or another,

need. "He is too big to step in it"

    Hey Huck,
Still have my hard copy of the Fair Tax Book you signed at your rally here in Springfield Missouri at the airport hanger.
Now if Obama advocated the Fair Tax Plan I could see him getting this award notwithstanding I disagree with everything else he stands for.

He has done nothing but tear this Country apart, the U.S. Constitution be damned. He is selling out the very African American communities who supported him by is willful, wanton arbitrary dismissal of HR-25/S-1025 for the sake of POWER retention by the crooks in Congress who are hijacking our Liberty.

He should be educating them for support of its passage and all the good it would do for this Nation. How about a boycott of the IRS[Internal Racketeering Service] next April in protest where no one files their so-called "return".

9/12 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 1,000,000. Put the IRS out of its missery once and for all, demonstrating WE THE PEOPLE mean what WE say and say what WE mean!!! Tea Parties and all conservatives for LIBERTY. GO HUCK, RUN AGAIN!

Have Fox news advocate the FTP Non -Stop, every anchor in every time slot do a piece, on both channels demonstrating what 13 trillion dollars [returning from their off shore accounts], would do for the American economy.
    LIBERTY = FREEDOM
    FINANCIAL FREEDOM = TRUE LIBERTY
PASS THE FAIR TAX PLAN NOW!!

First of all, congrats to President Obama. It is a rare honor, and we should be proud that someone from the US received it.

However, the awarding of the honor is premature. He was nominated either prior to his entering office or within the first two weeks. Much of the accolades the selection committee sited occurred after he was nominated, which is a slap in the face to those who were also nominated but also actually "did" something to deserve the nomination.

It is my hope that when he accepts the award, he cites many of the other nominees and gives them the credit that they deserve. I would be even more impressed if he offers to share the award with one of them, especially those organizations that could use the money. In addition, he would then need to live up to the ideals of the award and work to spread peace around the world, but that doesn't mean we pull all of our troops out of the Middle East and lay down our weapons. By isolating and removing the terrorist threat around the world makes the world a safe and more peace place in the long run.

This is the attitude which has made the GOP completely obsolete.

Not only does the party no longer stand for principles, it now criticizes conservatives and libertarians who do.

Honesty, is a principle sir, and discouraging people from expressing their honest opinions smites of the same pompous elitism exemplified by the current regime.

Wake up and smell the tea, compromising with the evil that is socialism is inherently evil.

  • McCormick, Denis

I think he's right. The Republicans should focus on what the media and the Democrats have done to make the President look bad. You can first start with the Dodd Amendment. The Democrats put this into the "stimulus package", only to have the President look foolish. Then you have the President address Congress about the healthcare bill and all the "myths" swirling around. Are the Democrats ignoring the call? Are they willing to throw Him under the bus?

The same goes with the media. They tout Obama as Superman. When the notion that the President was going to Copenhagen, the media were informing Americans that it was basically "in the bag". He failed. When Americans "laughed" about it, I believe it was aimed more at the press. It's like a little kid bullying the other kids in the neighborhood, knowing that he has a big brother who will do his fighting. When the kid gets slugged, the big brother comes to his defense, regardless of the situation. When the older brother gets his "butt kicked", do people laugh at the older brother or the younger one? Ususally it's the latter. That's what Republicans did last Friday.
As I've said before, it's always good to blast proposals. However, it takes true leadership and ideas to make something work.

Republicans have such an opportune time to reverse the image that they received over the last 4 years. Talk about the voucher program (this will increase the number of blacks votes), medical insurance reform (this will increase the number of doctor votes if we defend the medical association) and strnger foreign policy (this will increase the Jewish vote).

I think that this will just cause more people to lose respect for the Nobel Peace Prize committee. I'm guessing that most people realize that Obama didn't have any say in who received this award and that blaming him for it is just silly.

One does have to wonder what motives are the the minds of the Nobel Peace Prize committee however. Are they trying to shape foreign policy by awarding this to President Obama?

See, this is the kind of approach which allows a pass on outrageous actions. Sure, we could wait and wait and wait on the Left to explain the reasons for Obama's award, but they never will - because they can't. It's always better to provide a catylist when you prefer to force the issue in something on which the Left has no basis. Simply sitting back and waiting on the evolution of a position is one of the main reasons that things have fallen as far as they have - Huckabee's mindset is far too gracious for these times.

  • Tysinger, Andrew

    10/09/2009 01:23 PM

When the President of the United States wins a prestigous prize, he should be congratulated, first and foremost.

He should also be held accountable by the American people for what he has done and choses to do in the coming days, weeks, months, years. This goes for any President, not just our current Commander in Chief.

I think the prize is being awarded prematurely, but I therefore question the Nobel committee more than the winner of the Prize.

The President faces some difficult decisions concerning this country's foreign policy. He must prove that he is worthy, capable, and resilient. If he cannot, he will not earn a second term in office, in my opinion.

I remain less concerned about all that he has done and more about all that he has not done.

  • Parker, A.J.

    10/09/2009 01:15 PM

I agree Huck. But like the first commenter, we're not whining. As far as I know, conservatives are united in the fact that we think the prize is by default, worthless, given it's past recipients.

Obama was not nominated for work he did in the first two weeks of his presidency. Whoever or however many people nominated him, the Nobel committee most likely did not decide who would get the Prize until this week.

Nevertheless, because of Obama's attitude and efforts this year and last, the world has obviously become a more fertile ground for peace.

People now view the U.S. as a leader in bringing people together and seeing beyond culture, nationality, gender, religion, and other more superficial differences.
