Yet for some reason I can’t understand, my tourist jaunt is being compared to Nancy Pelosi’s diplomatic mission to Syria in April of 2007. The two trips couldn’t be more different.
First, there is our difference in status. Speaker Pelosi visited as a sitting government official, and not just any old member of Congress, but as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Speaker is one of the highest-ranking leaders of our country and is second in line to assume the presidency. So there is a world of difference between my traveling as a private citizen and Nancy Pelosi’s traveling in her official capacity as Speaker.
Second, there is the stark contrast between the countries visited. Syria is one of our most implacable enemies and is on the State Department’s list as a state sponsor of terror. The State Department made it clear to Speaker Pelosi before her trip that they did not want her to go. Israeli officials were described as “shocked” by her visit to Syria. By contrast, Israel is one of our closest allies and friends. No one in the Obama Administration asked me not to go. Frankly, I don’t think anybody cared that I was going, and I see no reason why they should.
Third, there is the difference in the purpose of the trips. Speaker Pelosi went specifically to hold formal talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad. I did not meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu. I did not negotiate with anybody about anything –I didn’t even negotiate over the price of a few souvenirs because I did not shop.
As a private citizen, I have commented on what I have seen based on my past experiences. When I visited Israel in the 1970’s and 1980’s I had no problem visiting Nablus. But this time, I couldn’t go because I was with Israelis, and they cannot enter Nablus or Bethlehem or Ramallah. I commented on this because I thought it was remarkable that there are places Israelis can’t go in their own country.
Just as I believe that Israelis should be able to travel to all parts of their country, I believe they should be able to live wherever they want in that country, and that the U. S. government should not tell an Israeli family that they can’t add a nursery to their house when they welcome a new baby, or tell an Israeli village that they can’t add a classroom to their schoolhouse. As a private citizen, I disagree, and I have a right to disagree, with President Obama’s demand for a freeze on Israel’s building new settlements, and with his further demand for a freeze on expansion of existing settlements, despite the natural growth that a community experiences. His call for such a complete freeze contradicts the policy not just of President Bush, but of President Clinton, indeed of all our presidents since Israel’s victory in the 1967 war.
President Obama’s unprecedented stance toward Israel doesn’t just contravene the past forty years of American policy, it contravenes his own statements as a presidential candidate.
I visited a planned housing development in East Jerusalem that President Obama is insisting not be built because he seems to anticipate that Jerusalem will be divided and this area will go to the Palestinians. Yet in June 2008, candidate Obama told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (“AIPAC”) that “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.”
In 2007, then-Senator Obama assured AIPAC that “we should never seek to dictate what is best for the Israelis and their security interests. No Israeli Prime Minister should ever feel dragged to or blocked from the negotiating table by the United States. We must be partners….” And in 2008, he promised AIPAC that “We will also use all elements of American power to pressure Iran.” But when President Obama announced his new settlement policy, he coupled it with an implied threat that unless the Israelis capitulated, he might retaliate by not doing as much as he could to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. He sounded ominously like Tony Soprano.
In 2008 President Obama also told AIPAC that he was “a true friend of Israel.” He emphasized his “strong commitment to make sure that the bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable today, tomorrow and forever.” He said that “as president, I will work with you to ensure that this bond is strengthened. … I will bring to the White House an unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security.” When he said that Israel “can advance the cause of peace” by not “building new settlements” if that was “consistent with its security,” he said nothing about expanding existing settlements, and, more importantly, he spoke as if settlement policy was entirely up to the Israeli government, not the U. S. government.
As a candidate President Obama never told the American people that if he was elected, he would order a draconian freeze on all settlement activity with no exceptions. He never told the American people that he would move U. S. policy backward by reneging on the understanding by Presidents Clinton and Bush that Israel would never give up all settlements, but would keep some close to the 1949 armistice line by swapping land.
But after a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu in May, President Obama announced that, “Settlements have to be stopped in order for us to move forward.” With whom are the Israelis supposed to move forward? With the Hamas terrorists of the Gaza Strip? With Fatah’s Mahmoud Abbas who barely controls the sidewalk in front of his office in the West Bank? Yet President Obama took the ball out of the Palestinians’ court and said that it wasn’t their wanton destruction of life and property that was holding back the peace process, no, it was Israeli construction. Nothing about the Palestinians’ recognizing Israel’s basic right to exist or renouncing terror to move the process forward, no, it was all the fault of those pesky settlements.
In case the Arab world didn’t get that message of “blame the victim” loud and clear, President Obama reiterated it in his major address in Cairo on June 4: “The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements.” Interesting use of the word “legitimacy” to a group of people who don’t accept the legitimacy of Israel herself. A little wink and nod there.
Not only isn’t President Obama helping the peace process, he is hurting it by telling the Palestinians that there is no reason for them to do anything but wait for Israel to make unilateral concessions under American pressure. Such pressure must be contrasted with the partnership we’ve always had with Israel, the one he pledged to continue when he was looking for American votes, not Arab approval.

As I read some of the posted comments, I am saddened by the lack of critical thinking, regardless whether it agrees with my view or not. I think Gov. Huckubee deserves supporters who can think critically and evaluate issues intellectually in view of conservative Biblical principles and American values. I wonder if some of those commenting here can try to do that for a change. It will definitely move the discussion to a different level so opinions can be based on facts not feelings.

President Obama needs to decide whose side he is on - American or Arab...and he cannot/must not ride the fence. If fully American then he will support Israel with all we have. Of course, Israel, from a biblical standpoint, does not need us because God is their protector. But, also from a biblical standpoint, we as a nation must defend Israel and pray for her peace. "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

It is evident that God loves ,and protects the Jews.. They would not have survived as a nation, or as a people , if he had not..... They are such a small little dot in the world. They are surrounded by their enemies... And, they are huge country's.. with billions of people.
America has stood by Israel in the past, but we have not been their protection.. God has been..... But, America has been blessed for their support.......
God also loves the Palestine people, and could provide for them a wonderful country..
I do not believe there will be peace till Jesus return's .. But, the Jews will sign a peace treaty with the antichrist......
There will be christian's from Palestine, Israel, and all over the world living in harmony side by side when Jesus does return..... I believe that day will be very soon.. Maybe 7 yrs. from today , or tomorrrow..
May God bless Mike Huckabee and all his efforts to make our country and others a better place.. Wish we had more politicians just like him.. He is fighting a powerful enemy and it is not human....

Grace Reid said this in response to my comment about the misunderstanding behind referring to the Jews as the chosen people:
"To Frank Talk,
Read what Scripture says about Covenants - they are eternal as God is eternal. God is unchanging & He is always faithful - even when His children are not (OT and NT).Just because His chosen people are currently prodigals (from the Christian pov), does not mean that He has abandoned them nor that He ever will do so."
My response:
God isn't breaking the covenant. It is eternal. He is upholding it, in it's entirety.
Part of the covenant God made with the Jews was this in Exodus 19:5,: "Now therefore, *if* ye will *obey my voice* indeed, and *keep my covenant*, *then* ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine".That means part of the deal is that the Jews "keep my covenant". They didn't. They instead renounced Jesus. God had sent a long line of prophets to the Jews, but after they renounced Jesus and called for his death, he has not sent them anymore prophets at all.
That is why I think most people misunderstand the meaning of referring to the Jews as the chosen people.
It's true that God is forgiving and if the Jews do change and do eventually "keep my covenent" and accept Jesus, then they will be fine.
But if they don't, when Jesus returns, all of the Jews who do not accept him will be destroyed and will spend eternity in hell. The New Testemant is very clear about that.
That is another reason I think there is misunderstanding about referring to the Jews as the chosen people.

"President Obama’s unprecedented stance toward Israel doesn’t just contravene the past forty years of American policy, it contravenes his own statements as a presidential candidate."WELL, I'M NOT SURPRISED.
As a matter of fact, before President Obama's election, I told people that he would be no real aid to Israel as he was presenting himself at the time of elections and even when he visited Israel. Unfortunately, most people thought I was taking too much liberty with my opinions, but, now, here we are with the current administration opposing sovereign Israeli construction on their own land. Which, by the way, Irael has had to fight for several times to the risk of losing the whole nation. What our president, most people, and even many Christians do not understand about Israel and its land, stems from a failure to comprehend the UNCONDITIONAL covenant in Genesis 12:1-3. Even if Israel does not physically possess its land, this covenant guarantees that the title deed to it still belongs to the Jewish people forever. This however is not a popular truth.
Gov. Huckabee you have our prayers, especially now that you are "going against the grain" politically in standing for Israel's right to its land. Just keep doing the right thing!

I am sure Mr. Huckabee has the right to speak his mind as a private citizen, but I am greatly disturbed that he, as a Christian, would advocate the displacement of Palestinian families to house settlers. Supporting Israel is something I can understand and accept, but supporting Israel in acting against Biblical standards that Mr. Huckabee preached at one time is only political expediency.
Israel has many alternatives to house settlers but to ignore the fact that it is trying stamp out the Arab presence in certain areas and proclaim Israel a Jewish state, not only flies in the face of Christian principles but also great American values we hold dear to. -

God is unchanging & He is always faithful - even when His children are not (OT and NT).Just because His chosen people are currently prodigals (from the Christian pov), does not mean that He has abandoned them nor that He ever will do so.
You cannot use the waywardness & unfaithfulness of His people as a proof against His own faithfulness or we children of the New Covenant would be in dire straits as well!!
Israel is holy-set apart because God has literally touched it - physically, supernaturally - in every conceivable way a land can be touched by Him! His people are holy-set apart because His Son was knit from the flesh of a very holy Jewish woman. To take that which is holy-set apart & render it to ordinary use is the very definition of what it means to profane something.
We support & do our best to protect His people *for His sake*.

For those of you who believe that Palestinians deserve land and peace, you are absolutely right, as Governor Huckabee has stated. But have you looked at a map of Israel. It's about the size of one of our smallest states, New Jersey, in the very center of a huge Muslim Empire. The real problem is the rest of the Muslim nations won't allow Palestinians, who they pretend to defend leave Palestine and live in their countries, so they are confined in places like overcrowded Gaza in poverty. They are told Israel is the enemy from birth and so lob bombs at them. None of us would put up with our next door neighbors throwing bombs into our back yards, then claiming we're the bully by not letting them in.
On a trip to Israel in 2004, I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of wealthy homes of Israeli Arabs, who had embraced peace with Israel and left to prosper.
To Frank Talk: These two verses may answer your question;
Romans 11:26
And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. Also; Zechariah 12:10
"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. -

Good questions, Frank Talk. We could have a great discussion from a theological standpoint. I will only say that no matter what calamity came upon the Jews, God has always preserved a faithful remnant. And there will come a great in-gathering of the Jews at a later point in history. Until then, we should remember who our most faithful ally in the region has been.
We have asked Israel to do much for peace in the region. You may remember during the first Gulf War, when Scud missiles were raining down, we asked Israel not to retaliate. How many nations would have accepted that? And our policies since then has pushed them to grant concession after concession.
Throughout the 90s, we acted like wimps on the world stage. And it got us bombed embassies; a hole in the side of the Cole; and finally the destruction of the World Trade Towers, the partial destruction of the Pentagon and a hole in the ground in Shanksville, PA. It seems we didn't learn any lessons from that, cause we are big into apologetics these days.
Judge Deborah asked: "Would he (President Obama) allow the ACLU to tell conservative Christians we can't build in Boise, Idaho or Little Rock, Arkansas or Dayton, Ohio?" And I'm afraid the answer to that could easily be yes. Remember, he says we are not a Christian nation ... and made some claim about us being a Muslin nation. :-P

Someone below (AV Fundamentalist)referred to the Jews as God's chosen people, and that is a phrase I often here used. But it seems to me most people who use the phrase don't have a clear understanding of it's meaning.
This is now I look at the meaning of the phrase.
For one thing, God chose the Jews as the initial way to make His voice heard and His presence felt in the world. He sent them prophets and The Ten Commandments. That part seems very clear. For another, there is Deuteronomy 14:2, "For you are a holy people to YHWH your God, and *God has chosen you to be his treasured people* from all the nations that are on the face of the earth."
For another (and this is a key that often is ignored), there is Exodus 19:5, "Now therefore, *if* ye will *obey my voice* indeed, and *keep my covenant*, *then* ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine".
But the Jews did not obey His voice and keep His covenant. They, for the most part, did the opposite. They renounced Jesus. God has not sent them any more prophets since they did.
Today most Jews are secular. That certainly doesn't meet the terms God set out in his deal with the Jews.
So in that context, I question whether or not the people who refer to the Jews as God's chosen people have a clear understanding of what they mean.
If anyone disagrees with my thoughts, I'd be interested in reading their comments.

I think it is interesting what Allen P. Ross says on his website, christianleadershipcenter.org: “The land was a gift from God by grace, and not deserved by Israel or anyone else. He is the owner of the land and will bestow it on Abraham’s seed when the time is right. But if Israel is not a blessing, if they do not receive the love of God and enter the covenant by faith in Christ, they will not have a share in it. Now that Christ has come, they can only receive the promises by faith in their Messiah. God will fulfill the promises…in the latter days, and not to an atheistic or disobedient state as we find today. For Christians to defend Israel’s possession of the land at the expense of the lives of Palestinians misses the point--God himself drove the Israelites out of the land time and time again because of such practices and unbelief. We can believe that God has a future for believing Israel, but that does not mean we must endorse everything unbelieving Israel does. The Arabs and the Jews can only be united in the blessing of God when they come to faith in Jesus Christ. … The Arabs are not here and numerous just because of Abram’s sin with Hagar; they are here because God has blessed and multiplied them through a son of Abraham. God’s choice of Israel was not favoritism, but the choice solely by grace of one line to be the channel of blessing so that all might be blessed. This includes great blessings for the Arabs, now, and even greater if they come to faith in the only one who can bless people with an eternal identity and inheritance based on the promises to Abraham. Christians must keep a balanced biblical perspective on the people in the land and the grace of God. ‘Grace’ does not mean one group is better than the other--it means in spite of their sin God chose them to be the instrument of his revelation and salvation in the world. Choosing to work through Israel does not mean that all Israelites are automatically saved, and all Arabs are not. Salvation is another matter for the grace of God.”

It is understandable why they are taking your visit so seriously. You are not currently a US Government official, but you are considered one of the top front runners in 2012 for the GOP and the President’s polls numbers have been declining.
When past US President’s met with the previous Palestinian leadership, Fatah/PLO, they were dealing with a corrupt leadership with business ties. Prior to peace negotiations, Yasser Arafat would secretly encourage his people to demonstrate in the streets in order to show US officials his frustrations in dealing with his citizens. He did this in order to demonstrate Palestinian need for more US foreign assistance. When the Palestinian Authority would receive these funds, government officials with siphon them off through their business interests. The Palestinian people would quite often tell me they had better employment opportunities and could travel more freely within Israel when they were under Israeli control, prior to the 1993 Oslo Accords.
In general, both the Israeli and Palestinian people want the same thing. They want security, so their children can safely walk or ride a bus home from school. They want employment, so they can feed, cloth and educate their family. They want better education, so their children can have a more prosperous future. And, you are correct; they want the freedom to travel within their own country and to do so securely. It is a conundrum. There is fertile ground for change and future peace based on the desires of the majority of its citizenry. However, how can the peace process move forward productively when there is one movement to divide Israel into two separate countries, and the other is to segment it into a patchwork quilt with security walls and gates preventing the movement of both Israelis and Palestinians. It is trust that is lacking on both sides. It is rigidity, holding onto the past that prevents them from moving forward. We should remember, prior to 1948, they did live in the same neighborhoods, and most were good neighbors to one another.

Randy Gearhart 08/19/2009 1:47 pm. I believe this is Mike Huckabee's most controversial message ever. He appears to be taking a position to the right of Netanyahu, who is widely regarded as a major hawk. And he is taking it at a time when the international community has just come to agreement about the illegality of the settlements.
Mike is probably the best politician of our lifetimes, but his trip to Israel and the uproar it will cause make no sense to me. Some will say it is to court Jewish financial support in America, but I just cannot believe that of the man whose integrity shines like a beacon. He must actually believe what he is saying. I think we should await what he has to say after he returns from Israel.

First, let me make it clear, that I am a Mike Huckabee support, but I am very dissappointed with this post. Not only do I disagree with Gov. Huckabee's position on the subject, but am more concerned with the duplicity in its approach. Gov. Huckbee is currently a private citizen, but is clearly a public figure. He fought for the highest office in this country and has since continued a very public life. Gov. Huckabee went to Israel in a very public way and it should be covered as such. I have no problem with anyone expressing their views in opposition to anyone, but here Gov. Huckabee utilizes the President's quotes to show his obvious waffling on this subject. Then leaves the implied threat of unleashing the Iranian nuclear option without support.
Bottomline is that I would expect more balance and understanding from such a respected public figure on such a complex and emotion packed issue. I am sure that Gov. Huckabee understands that there is no easy solution here and that we are talking about the safety and well being of millions of people on both sides of the issue.

What kind of government do we have left when the one who holds the highest office breaks campaign promises without a flinch evidently well knowing when he made them that he would not fulfill it.
Just wish that millions of Americans (especially the bible believing Christians) could have recognized those red flags early on) but wishing won't make it so.

I have been appalled by the decisions I have seen our president make thus far concerning Israel, and am amazed that the citizens in our country do not seem to be alarmed by it. Our president seems to conradict what he says one moment by the decisions he makes in another moment. I am saddened by the dirsction he seems to be leading us, but am not suprised by it. This one reason why I did not vote for him.

In response to what you wrote, i am very grateful. The moment U.S. support is removed from Israel, is the moment the U.S. will fail as a nation...God promises this. Take note and beware of the type of man Obama truly is as he is daily making his true colors shown.

I agree 100%. Obama shouldn't be making any demands of Israel. The only demands he should be making are of all of the folks he appointed to various positions...demands that they pay their taxes since he expects us to do so!

I agree with you. I am appalled at what our administration is now doing to Israel. He does not speak out like He should against what Iran is doing to its citizens, He lectures about how the people need to put Zelaya back in office in Hondorus and He makes it very clear He hates Israel (in my opinion). It does seem like our country is finally waking up to all this socialism that is coming.

Hey Huck, don't you worry about those pesky liberal bloggers or the article in Time. Your the #1 target because they see you as a threat now to Obama.

I hope you do make a run for 2012. BTW thank you for being a good Governor of Arkansas. You did so much for our state that I hope you can do the same for our country. But whatever you do you have my support. :)

I agree!! We have never had a President that has so bent over backward to our enemies and acted sooo not like the leader of the free world! How can one be president of the greatest nation in history and want to change it? I have never been truly ashamed of our president before, but I am now. They have all done things to not be proud of, but I have never been ashamed of my president. Keep putting the message out there, Mike!!

You are so right, Gov Huck. This Administration's posture toward Israel reflects poorly envisaged self-interest for America, and unwise, unfriendly manipulation of Israel. I wish there was something we could effectively do together to add to your support of Israel in spite of our nation's posture.
