The Second Amendment is very brief and pretty simple. It says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Let’s be very clear about what the Second Amendment is not. It is not about hunting. When I hear politicians talk about hunting and guns, I know that they do not understand the purpose of the Second Amendment. The founding fathers weren’t worried about our being able to bag a duck or a deer; they were worried about our keeping our fundamental freedoms. The Second Amendment is about our freedom, about protecting ourselves and having the capability to defend ourselves, our family, our property and our nation.
I believe that the intent of our Founding Fathers is evident. They wanted us to be able to defend ourselves from our own government, if need be, and from all threats to our lives and property. Second Amendment rights belong to individuals, not cities or states. Gun owners should control guns, not the government. Our founding fathers were worried that even with the checks and balances they built into our system of government, that system could fail, and we might someday face a new tyranny from our own government.
That is why they they gave us the Second Amendment. They knew that a government facing an armed populace was less likely to take away our rights, while a disarmed population wouldn’t have much hope. Ronald Reagan had it exactly right when he said “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” Without our Second Amendment rights, all of our other rights aren’t inalienable, they’re just “on loan” from the government.

Dan Fannin,
Our founding fathers instituted the 2nd Amendment to give us the means to protect ourselves against an oppressive government. Obviously the average citizen cannot be walking around with rocket launchers, grenades, etc., but I don't believe that it would be too much of stretch to say that this law does not serve its purpose if it doesn't give us a somewhat equal footing with the government. In light of this, it is not unreasonable to think that the founders would have supported a weapon of a similar capacity as the military's. Otherwise we would be bringing a knife to a gun fight.
The number of shootings that occur with AK-47's and AR-15's is extremely small. The overwhelming majority of crimes committed with firearms are with handguns. In light of this, do you propose that the government regulate handguns? Also, most hunting rounds are more powerful than the ones used by these so called "assault weapons." (Assault Weapons are actually fully automatic, where AR's and
AK's available to citizens are semi-automatic.) -

Why did the mainstream media not point out this candidate survey that Obama filled out in 1996, in which he confirms that he supports legislation to, "ban the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns"?http://okforhuckabee.blogspot.com/2008/10/must-see-obama-questionaire-from-sep.html

Gov. Huckabee,
It is fortunate that American's have grown comfortable with our government, we need to remain aware that the only reason we have been able to grow comfortable is because the Second Amendment has prevented the government from posing a threat to us for all these years. History is full of stories of unarmed citizens being taken over by dictators (Germany is one such example). Could that happen here? Not if we maintain the right to keep and bear arms. No other country has the freedoms that we have here in the United States. When politicians take an anti-Second Amendment stance, we seriously need to wonder about their motives. I praise you and Huckpac for the values it stands upon and the message it continues to spread. I am committed!!

Hello everyone. I wanted to take a few minutes and let you all know how important your comments are to me. I do read them often, and sometimes find really good ideas that Huck PAC can implement. But more important than that is the fact that I need to know what you think. I blog frequently so that you know exactly where I stand on the issues. It is just as important that I know where you stand. If you disagree with me, I want to hear that. If you have ideas that will help Huck PAC grow I want to hear those. Most of all, though, I want to know what you think of the issues I raise in each video and blog. Thank you all for being a part of the Huck PAC family. Your participation is important to me.

Mike thank you for making the 2nd amendment clear as water. The left manages to turn what is very clear into the darkest, muddiest and mis-represented statement in the entire constitution. If they would only read your statement and take it to heart.

Thank you, Mr. Huckabee for this wonderful essay on the second. I agree one-hundred percent. We need to do everything we can to keep our second amendment right to bear arms. I personally think we should have a more strongly worded second amendment. Maybe add the words "and this time we mean it"! (Yes, I plagiarized John Ringo's, The Road to Damascus, which interestingly has a lot of events in it that parallel what's happening now).

The Second Amendment is second only to freedom of religion in the backbone of our freedoms and liberty. I have seventeen Patriot ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War for just these things. We cannot sit back and allow them to be destroyed, bit by bit. We must have the same conviction and committment to liberty.

The NRA is the largest guns rights organization and we still need them, but if you thoroughly research them there has been much taint in their history. for example:

For a more fundamentalist gun lobby,
PLEASE check out
Gun Owners of America. For the time being both are needed. Just use gunowners.org to verify anything the NRA says… Just my humble opinion….

It is no surprise the ammendment allowing us to bear arms precedes the ammendment forbidding the government from forcing us to house soldiers. If you look at historical context, these were a direct reflection of rights they were denied during the revolutionary war. The red coats were allowed to take shelter wherever they pleased and patriots were not permitted to say no or to protect themselves by bearing fire arms. Obviously, our forefathers meant to give us the right and privelage of protecting ourselves not only from each other but as you say Mike, from the government as well.

It is good to read many of the comments made. There are a lot of good Americans leaving comments on Huckpac.
I am glad we still have the second amendment. I am glad that we have people with consealed arms permits. Hopefully if I get in a situation where a gun is useful, a gun owner will be able to intervene.
I wouldn't want to be the one to tell my brothers they have to give up their guns and they won't be able to hunt anymore. PETA backed off from messing with hunters, at least they don't sit under the deer stands for fear of being peed on or worse shot.
Like someone said, crooks will always have fire arms. The revolving door policy does not help.
It is hard to fathom the fire power of gangs, hopefully our police officers are able to keep them contained. Now we hear about the drug cartel wars on the U.S. Mexico border and extending up into Canada.
Stay safe, aware, protect our rights and hold our governments accountable.

The Courts over the past few years have proven they do not care what the founding father believed in or what their intent was when the Constitution was written. They will argue this is not the same world as back then so it is their duty to interpret what is happening now and how we should legislate it. (yes I said legislate, not judge because they have turned into legislators and feel it is their right and duty) We have provisions to change the Constitution and this is not how it is to be done. But as long as we have the liberals in charge, Katy bar the door.

Thanks to the 2nd amendment We still enjoy our first amendment. Our rights are eroding as i write this. Our American citys are some of the most dangerous places on earth. A major reason for this, is the restriction of our 2nd amendment rights. The reality is, an Armed society is a polite society. And old proverb by very true. Keep up the good fight. I live in a rural area, a couple hours drive from nearest large city. Prison gang drug dealers live here. There is no safe place in America any longer. The drug gangs are poisioning our nation, they are contaminating every aspect of American life. Some polititions, seek to water down our 2nd amendment rights. These polititions are Fools, plain and simple.

Huck,my wife and I love you, we came to the book signing here in Jacksonville, FL, for the record, you were the only presidential candidate that i could with a clear christian concious vote for, at your request we voted for McCain. We are Black Americans, again Huck we believe in your message; however, at the signing there was no genuine connection there, the warmth that is felt in your speech didn't translate over in that greeting. Also, I was truly let down in the picture portion of your book wherein the only Black American represented is shining your shoes. I was embarrassed to see it because I was on the front line encouraging my family and church members to support you. I By the way I haven't given up on you Huck. Just a little concerned.

My second amendment rights are important to me because..... I am a mother of four children in a world where personal property and respect for other in their homes has long been gone. My husband works out of town alot and I am afraid that one night I will need to defend my family. My inlaws live across the road from me and in broad daylight someone kicked in their back door and stole everything. What am I to do if some crazed idiot comes into my home? Ask him to leave? I don't think negotiation skills will do you much good! I will use the rights my forefathers gave me to protect my family. If it means taking the life of a intruder to save my childern then so be it. I will do what I must!

Governor Huckabee,
There is no question that our 2nd Amendment Rights have and continue to be under attack from extremist and ignorant uninformed citizens as the result of a corrupt news media and educational system. It is incumbent upon those of us that own firearms and those of us who do not that still believe in our Constitution to make sure everyone understands all of our rights, especially the one that guarantees all of the rights espoused in the Constitution by providing the Tyranny of Government shall not be exercised upon the people.
We have a right as individual citizens to keep and bear arms in our homes, and in places where the law allows, on our person. We have the right to defend our homes and property. The Supreme Court has spoken most recently in the Hiller case in Washington, DC and will revisit the 2nd Amendment in broader terms soon enough. The founders were not unclear on their reasoning and wording. States are made up of individual citizens. Only one conclusion can be drawn from a fair reading of the Amendment and the Federalist Papers. The debate was not to protect the militias of the several states, if it had been it would have been stated as such. Militias must be constituted from individuals and thus the right is with one person not the state or its collective militia.
Justice Sotomayor may surprise all of us and her "Wise Latina Woman" comment may be our best look into her philosophy. Latina women are traditionally conservative, and with no burden of politics to pander to on this bench she has an opportunity to be a Wise Latina Woman. Appointed at the behest of Senator Alphonse DeMato by President George H.W. Bush are fears maybe President Obama's nightmare in the same way as Justice Suter was for President Bush 41.

Mike, I'm an avid hunter and don't think the 2nd amendment has a thing to do with why it was written. To hunt? The militia part is trying to be removed because we have a military..formed by the government not by the people.
The 2nd amendment is my gun carry permit. It was written to allow "We The People" to protect us from the government. -

Dear Governor, I am a 30yr military vetern who has believed all my life that the right to defend and protect myself and my loved ones is a RIGHT given to me by my creator. No pencil neck bureaucrat can deny that right of self preservation. We live in a world where 95% of the people would do anything for you,but the other 5% will kill you. I could not live with myself if I stood by and let something happen to one of the people I care about. When asked why I carry a gun, I reply because a cop is too heavy. Unlike the pencil necks I do not have a Driver/bodyguard or the Capital police at my beck and call, rather I live a good 20-25 min. away from any first responder. As do many of my fellow Americans.
Thanks for all that you do in preserving this great country. Never forget that there are many among us who will not quit nor give up in the protection of this great country.

It's called blowback.
Obama and Co. have actually
enriched our 2nd Ammendment heritage, without meaning to, of course. Here's a video from Jan 09.
I'm sure the number of firearm purchases has not dropped lately except where affected by shortages. Remember, the numbers cited are for purchases, not firearms. Most likely, most were multiple firearms purchases, hence, these numbers are probably overly conservative. -

Regarding the comment posted by Mr. Hansen regarding the fact that Japan has 120 million and only 50 murders a year: Japan has something that no longer exists in the U.S., a strict and functioning criminal justice system. I agree, the election of 2010 is as important as the presidential election 1012. We (the God fearing, common sense, Constitutionalist of the United States) need to wake up and take back control of our Republic. We are a representative democracy, our vote counts every other year when we elect people to represent us, our beliefs. The people we elect must remember "we hired you."
Please help Governor Huckabee! He can't do it by him self and nor can we by our selves. Come together and support Governor Huckabee, Glenn Beck, and others trying to take back the Republic for the people it represents. Thank you -

The principle of the Second Amendment is what the United States is all about. Ours is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. As such, the people must retain the right to rise up and overthrow their own government when that becomes necessary. They must also retain the ability to defend their lives and property against others who would do them harm.
However, the application of the Second Amendment in daily life is not so clear-cut as its spirit implies. The Second Amendment was written at a time when there were no machine guns, automatic rifles, or shoulder-fired missiles. There were also no cities with populations over a million, including large numbers of recent immigrants with grudges against those who are less disadvantaged. We have little problem with disarming street gangs in Los Angeles, because we understand it is in the public interest, but we have a harder time deciding where to draw the line in reasonable regulation of gun ownership.
I believe there is more fear in America of individual criminals and small gangs than there is of potential government confiscation of our weapons. I believe that Mike Huckabee needs to balance his reasonable concerns about losing our Second Amendment rights with a responsible position on maintaining a civil society in which people can feel safe to walk the streets. That way, he will enjoy the support of a much larger number of voters than those preoccupied with only one side of the argument.

Our second ammendment is already on the chopping block. As a veteran of the Marine Corp Viet Nam Era, I have seen this attack on our right to bear arms slowly being whittled away. The American people need to open their eyes at what is happening to our rights with this present regime. If they succeed in taking our weapons away, our rights will mean nothing. Our freedom will be gone and we will be back to first base. Score: Gov. 100, people 0.

I agree completely Governor. In fact, after 7 deployments, and over 20 some years of military service, one common thread I have seen as we have entered into any country is this: Disarm the people. Even if it is a group we had initially helped by arming them with Guns and Ammo...one of the first phases of our entrance would be the phase of "Pacification".
Right now we are one of the last nations to "Self-regulate". And yet we have so many elected Legislators working day and night to strip that ability from us. I fear that if they can take the ability for Americans to "Keep and Bear Arms" away, then there is the potential for a Self made crisis to be made, the insertion of troops after Posse Comitatus is suspended... and suddenly the Free America we once knew would be no more.
It may sound like a Story to some, or a Conspiracy to others. All I know is that if we lose our right to Defend ourselves from a Government become corrupt, then any ending is possible. Thank you for the oppportunity to voice my opinion. God Bless America, Keep Her Free-- and Vote for Huckabee in 2012 -

Mike, I agree with you 100 percent! The problem is, I have lost hope in that this will actually take place in our country. I don't understand why we the people have a allowed our government to take control of this issue. I live in California, which has the most extreme gun control laws I have seen. I can't buy any kind of an assault style rifle legally here. Yet you see them on the streets, yes the streets. The criminals are the ones who have these guns. I have always said, these guns laws are keeping good abiding citizens from owning guns, not the bad guys. The bad guys already have the guns and will always find ways to get the guns. They don't care about the law. But us good abiding citizens don't have guns because we obey the gun laws. Now we, the good citizens, can't protect ourselves from the bad because of the government. Seems a little backwards to me.

I have a fear that we are being lead down a path by well meaning idealistic liberals that are blind to the pitfalls that will come. Why are so many blind to the very history of this great country. Our founding fathers wisdom was developed by the very real abuse of power they left in Europe .After the taste of freedom that the new world offered by its distance from a controlling monarchy, the people stood up and said we have had enough.
After decades of watching congress and the white house spend and tax and then tell us we need to budget, the people ,as in "We the people", need to take a stand . The wisdom of the foundation that is our constitution ,and gov. structure, that is three seperate heads and our freedom to vote are the cornerstones that give me hope of a time when this ship of state will right its self.
Our problems are deaper than a single issue. The second ammendment, yes should be a simple no brain issue. But its not. The gov.take over of private companies would have had people marching in the streets before FDR.As a baby boomer in the 50's and 60's I saw a clear line of distinction between Soviet Socialism and American Capitalism. It is no long clear what we have. We have given up on letting capitalism work. Where will it stop? If we lose one of our rights the others will fall like dominoes.
Do we have free speach? Not if it is given a label of hate speach. And who decides what that is.Is the press a watchdog to bring to light abuse of power or have they gone to bed with the very ones they should be keeping an eye on? If there was ever a time in the last two hundred years that we need a grassroots movement it is now. We need a movement to clean house in DC. starting in 2010 . Thank you Mike for being a voice in the darkness. And for speaking truth in a world of half truths. -

I am a strong supoorter of the second admendment. I am a gun owner and beleive that each gun owner should be held responsible for the weapon that they own and that it does not end up in the hands of irresponsible people. I do believe that the guns should be more regulated. Why is it that every car in America has a title for it and a chain of custudy but not guns. I think the same should be true of guns. Guns should have titles and regestrations that get regularly updated and that the owners is personally responsible for the were abouts of their weapons. If a gun changes custody then the title should be transfered. There are two many unnessarry deaths in america due to guns and unless gun owners take action and recognize this then we all may be losing our second admendment right

Hello Mike,
I personally hated to see Sonia Sotomayor confirmed, but I am more disturbed because of what we may lose in our freedom as an American citizen.
I don't believe any of the politicians that are in control right now, have any feelings about preserving our freedom, but I think they are following a false prophet. They are on schedule of making this a socialistic country under a Dictatorship.
I know that a sudden change in enough of our citizens to combat the current administration, if we are going to survive this 4 years.
I am living on a small (minimum) social security check or I would be contributing to every organization that is fighting against Obama.
If he wasn't born a legal citizen of the United States of America, why can't he be removed from office.
Thanks Mike
Keep up the fight
You are in my prayers -

I completely agree. As a former British citizen who has now been adopted by America, the 2nd Amendment is clearly the core keeper of freedom in America. If the government ever wants to rule over the people, it needs them unarmed and unable to resist. The 2nd Amendment, as the founders intended it, is the last line of defense between liberty and tyranny.

Huck, you are right on. Hunting and Shooting are just gravy on the basic right that Americans are guaranteed to bear arms. This right was given to insure that our freedom shall not be taken away by a heavy handed government. A government set on taking away guns will eventually take away other freedoms because they know that the populace lacks the means to resist...I hope and pray that our great country never gets to the point of taking away our freedoms. What part of "shall not be infringed" do they not understand?

We have to be alert to the changes that are happening around us. The "big brother" government is treating us like cooking a frog. They turn up the heat slowly so we don't realize we are being cooked and then it's too late. We have to give the conservatives in congress the support they need so that we can block these "Sotomayer" type appointments and defend us in the halls of law so we don't need to push the big red button, which is the second amendment our right to bear arms . . . to defend ourselves from tyranny. Take back your country my friends!
