Les Phillip became involved in politics in 1984, just six years after becoming a naturalized American citizen. Les became concerned with the daily struggles of middle class America after becoming a parent and working in the private sector. Les realized that life is not just about where you are going but what you leave behind to your children and grandchildren.
Les is an outstanding Conservative Republican who fully understands the important issues facing his district, his state and his country. His principles are the same as those of Huck PAC and me. He is strongly pro-life, saying "As the Father of three daughters and a Christian I can honestly say that I am pro-life. I truly respect God’s power of creation and the blessing he gives us in our children." Les Phillip is a supporter of the FairTax. He believes the FairTax "will reduce the burden on lower income families while it treats everyone fairly, without a reduction of income to the government. As long as the government has the power to tax our income, we, the people, will continue to work for the government. It’s time to take control of our government and make it work for the citizens again."
Les Phillip understands the issue of Immigration. As an immigrant himself, he believes that our laws must be enforced and our borders secured. He also recognizes that the security of the United States is the primary duty of the Federal Government. I am pleased to endorse Les Phillip and urge you to support him and his campaign.

Concerning the Fair Tax, here are some numbers crunched by none other than myself. I wanted to see just how this proposal would affect real money earned by real people, and not rely on the advocates pushing either for or against the tax. Consider these simple examples:
Cost of a new home before FT implementation: $150,000.
Assume prices drop according to theory equivalent to the FT.
Cost of home? Approximately $100,000.
Tax on new home? $23,000!!!!!!!!!
Cost of Post-FT home? $123,000.You will be paying interest on a $23,000 tax!
Assume that interest rates fall. Really fall. Let's assume 3% as opposed to my own 6%.
A loan of $23,000 for 30 years will cost you $97 per month at that rate.
That amounts to $35,000 over 30 years. Just to finance the tax!!!!!!!!!!!
Wanna save the money and buy pre-existing? Find one if you can, and find one you can afford if you can. The prices for existing homes will skyrocket.
Here's an example with an automobile loan.
Purchase a $20,000 car at 5% for 5 years for a total of $22,300.
That's $44 per month just for the tax. Over 5 years that's $2640.
..........and to the moonbat notion that imbedded taxes will be a thing of the past?
You may want to sell your post-FT home in around 20 years or so. You will want to recoup your investment, which of course includes that 23% tax you've financed up to your backside, so that will be reflected in your sell price, unless you're just feeling really charitable that day.
Total? $190,614......and this amount does not reflect any normal appreciation in the value of the home.....simply what it will cost you because of the Fair Tax.
Now you need to sell your home for whatever reason. You could simply write our your listing as such:
For sale! Beautiful home on nice lot for (example) $160,000 (market value) plus must recover Fair Tax vigorish $30,614 (cost of 23% tax financed over those 20 years) for a total of $190,614.
........and watch 'em run!
And why not?
Yes, Virginia. There is a Santa Claus. He's pointed us toward a pre-existing home, the same size as the new one we looked at for $100,000. It's ten years old and was appraised for $75,000......but the owner knows he can sell it for the same price as the new one, or very close to it, because the buyer knows he will still be spared paying the Fair Tax! A shopping savings of $23,000!!!!!!!! Voila! Instant value created out of a poot in the wind!
..........and meanwhile, while new homes aren't selling, the builder, the painter, the plumber, the roofer, and the boys slinging lumber down at the home center are declaring bankruptcy because the new home market has collapsed. Couple that with cheap Mexican labor already making things hard and go figure.
..........but at least there are now more pre-existing homes for sale!........at inflated prices, of course.
Understand this as well, friends. The Fair Tax legislation was so structured the way it is as a selling point to politicians.......as though we have to maintain the current level of taxation in order for them to even consider it. That simply isn't right. Ask yourself one simple question: Do you believe that there is waste, fraud, and corruption in government? If you do, then passing the Fair Tax will simply codify that waste, fraud, and corruption into law. That is so misguided.
The structure of the Fair Tax is sound......the level of the tax is wrong. The very same plan, but set at about 10% is the way to go.

This is great news! Thank you, Governor. Les will do us proud.
When are you headed for Alabama and what can we do to get you here? Believe it or not, the South still does not understand the Fair Tax. We know more than most areas, but a lot of work needs to be done on the issue. I purpose many town hall meetings across the country to get folks educated on the Fair Tax and dispel the myths early, before the 2010 elections. We need Fair Tax, Moral, and True Conservatives elected between now and then.
Remember folks, any legislation or policy made now can be overturned with new leadership so let's get busy. July 4th is almost upon us. Let's brew some more "Astro-turf" TEA!
Governor, one more thing, How about getting Glenn Beck on your show and put him on the hot seat or just educate him on the Fair Tax. And how about getting Sara Palin on and have her commit to the Fair Tax.
It would not hurt to try to talk with Newt also.
Thanks for all you do! -

The Fair Tax is very similar to a VAT, but it is superior in two very important ways: 1. The prebate untaxes poverty level consumption, and 2. The compliance costs are lower because the Fair Tax does not require the submission of paperwork for transactions that cancel each other out.
Of course, the most important thing to note is that the VAT being discussed is intended to add to the current tax code, not replace it. I could support it if it were intended to replace the income tax, but not as an extra tax. A VAT would be a dramatic improvement over the current system, but the Fair Tax is even better.
As for Glenn Beck, he's a reasonable man. I doubt he'd let a personal grudge keep him from supporting the Fair Tax if he appeared on Huckabee and actually heard the Governor out. It seems Glenn's biggest fear is also what Fair Tax supporters dread the most about the proposal- the prospect of the income tax returning after it is enacted, which brings us right back to this crazy VAT proposal.

Dear Governor Huckabee, and all others concerned;
There have been some disturbing developement in regards to the FairTax of late.
First there is the talk going around Washington about adding a VAT to our current tax system. This is clearly unacceptable. Politicians are bringing up the FairTax in these discussions in ways that blur the true intent of the FairTax and make it sound like it is the VAT being discussed. This needs claification in the media.
Hugh Hewitt has now co-authored a book against the FairTax. It consists of mis-statements and distortions that Fairtax supporters can easily debunk but it still clouds the issue with peope who have not studied the FairTax.
Glenn Beck has come out against the FairTax. His reasons are not well known' but he holds a great deal of sway with potential supporters.
Newt Gingrich, through his American Solutions website is promoting a version of the Flat Tax. They are claiming that more people support a Flat Tax than the FairTax. Their research that this conclusion was drawn from was so flawed that I was appalled that their organzation would use it and hope to have any credibility.
The situation in this country at this time is so critical that a mistake cannot be afforded. People are ripe for a change in our tax system, but that change must be positive, and productive.
Governor Huckabee, I am asking you to use your influence at Fox to get the debate to take place. If Glenn Beck wants to support the Flat Tax fine. If some group wants a VAT, let them argue it's benefits. If American Solutions wants to defend flawed research, let them. But let's have the FairTax on the stage too.
The debate must be a true one. Each side must have time to give their information and time for rebuttals. Time is of great importance, it must take place soon, but there needs to be time for word to get out. Sponsors will be needed, and they can help with gaining an audience. Up till now the media has kept the FairTax a secret but the Flat Tax and the VAT are discussed in the media. It is time for the people of the U.S. to here all the ideas. It is after all our future. -

I had lunch with Les the other day and was very impressed with his ideology, and his ability to frame the issues in a way that will force the other side to address them directly. This should be an exciting race and a chance to give a freshman representative a run for his money.

So glad that the day I found your blog, you're endorsing a candidate for MY district!
My husband and I were bummed about the current Representative winning that seat last November. We'll definitely be looking for more from Phillips as the next race gears up.
