Wall Street Goes Trick-or-Treating early

Dear Huck PACkers-

I wanted to write you to convey my disgust with the passing of this 451 page bailout bill. Wall Street has gone trick-or-treating in Washington a little bit early this October. Wall Street is getting the treats and America is getting tricked. The “Axis of Arrogance” has tried to pull the wool over the eyes of the Main Streeters and in doing so hid a sty full of pork in a bill whose constitutionality is questionable at best. Friends, the folks in Washington continue to treat your wallet as their tip jar and this has to stop.

Just check out a few provisions in this bill:

Sec. 211. Transportation fringe benefit to bicycle commuters.

Sec. 308. Increase in limit on cover over of rum excise tax to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Sec. 309. Extension of economic development credit for American Samoa.

Sec. 312. Deduction allowable with respect to income attributable to domestic production activities in Puerto Rico.

Sec. 317. Seven-year cost recovery period for a motorsports racing track facility.

Sec. 322. Tax incentives for investment in the District of Columbia.

Sec. 325. Extension and modification of duty suspension on wool products; wool research fund; wool duty refunds.

At a time when we are at “ground zero” and on the verge of an all out financial collapse, I am disgusted that these provisions were made.

At a time when Congress had the opportunity to do something to help the American economy, they lived up to their low approval rating. The only thing we can thank Congress for right now is that they are consistent. They are consistently spending money that doesn’t belong to them, consistently expanding pork projects, consistently doing nothing to help rebuild the American economy and consistently hurting the future of our country. Ultimately, they are consistently ignoring their own values, principles and beliefs and as a result, the American People are going to suffer.

Without the bailout there might have been some temporary hurt, but the long term effect will be far worse because of the precedent this bill has set and the “Bail-Aholics” it will create. Within minutes of the bill passing the state of California was already in line asking to be the next recipient of a Government hand out. We are creating an economy where you cannot fail and by doing so disabling our ability to ever truly succeed.

I am afraid this is just the beginning of the bailouts. We must not go silent into the night, we have to continue to fight and stand up against these legislators.

Consider contributing $4.51, a penny for every page of this ludicrous bill to Huck PAC. We will use it to help fund a changing of the guard and restore trust back to our government.

Stay strong in the fight,

Mike Huckabee

PS:  I’ll also be addressing this issue on the 2nd edition of “Huckabee” this weekend on the Fox News Channel.  We will only be on Sunday night at 8pm ET, 7pm CT due to an already scheduled special that will run Saturday night.  After this week, my show will air on both Saturday and Sunday at 8pm ET, 7pm CT.  Please email all your friends and those on your email directory and ask them to watch.

We have had an enormous number of comments regarding the issue of the Congressional bailout.  It has ignited passions of Americans from coast to coast like few things have and yet in the bubble of D. C., they really don’t seem to understand.

I hope you’ll join HuckPAC with your prayers, contributions, and actions to help good people get elected in the next 30 days.  I hope you’ll share your comments with me and engage in the online conversation we’ll be having over the next couple of days on the issue of the bailout and your reactions to my show on Fox News Channel.

God bless you!

    Ben Dribus:

I cant really look down on anyone who feels that they can't vote for McCain because of their conscience.

I do think that it is wishful thinking to suppose that a third party ticket will result in government reform during an election with one of the most polarizing figures in United States History. Barack Obama is the epitome of everything that conservatives are against.

Obama's radical stances on abortion, gay marriage, and sexual indoctrination of our children will drive most of them to the polls.

He is the epitome of everything that classic conservatives are against. His radical stances on gun control, redistribution of wealth, socialized healthcare, government growth, out of control spending, and taxation will drive most classic conservatives to the polls.

We can find out who's theory was futile after the election. If McCain defeats Obama and the turnout for third party ticket is relatively low, than we will know who's approach was inefective.

If Obama wins by a narrow margin and the statistics show that conservatives had a strong turnout or had similar numbers as the last election, we will also get an answer. Lets crunch the numbers and let them speak for themselves.

Let's apply the Hitler analogy in regard to voting for a third party ticket during this election. Because we perceive both parties as a threat we will vote for third party tickets who we know virtually nothing about in the last 26 days of an election. Look at all the information we have found out about Obama in the last four days--and he has been running for over a year. 26 days is not enough time for the candidates to be properly vetted and for all of the questionable circumstances in regard to their records to surface. Running on a social conservative platform doesn't gaurantee that a candidate is fit to be the President. If we compromise our standards in order to avoid what we percieve as a worse threat by voting for candidates who we know virtually nothing about, then we may end up with an unattended consequence.

Don't get me wrong--I agree with you--this country is in desperate need of a third party ticket. Lets do the practical thing--lets vote this threat to everything that we stand for out of office, form a third party, and assemble a huge grassroots effort in the next four years to present a viable third party candidate. Even if we vote the conservative candidate out of office we will still need a viable candidate in 2012. Our battle will be fought in the primaries of the next election. Lets start preparing now.

In regard to Hannity comments--I wasn't aware that praising somebody for finally living up to their ethic responsibilty when they have just recently displayed a lack of integrity was something bad. Maybe if we chastise people when they are wrong and praise them when the are right we can teach them an object lesson in integrity.

Yes, I lied about that being my last post.

Those who say that McCain should only stick to what he will do and not point out Obama's inconsistencies do not understand what is that supports your argument in an election.

There are many reasons to tell what is wrong with your opponent.

    1. If your opponent is dishonest about his
record--it is your duty to expose the
truth to the American people so they can
make an informed decision--and Obama has
been very dishonest about his record.

    2. It is your job to inform the American
people of policies that have caused harm
to the American people--they deserve to
    know.

    3. When you are conveying an opposing
stance that is the exact opposite of your
opponents, it reinforces your point to
show where you opponent is wrong.

It is only smear if the record is distorted--and the only one who has been distorting the record on Ayers is Obama who is lying through his teeth and the liberal media.

It is funny to see some who seem to be so upset over to McCains ads. Obama has been smearing McCain through ads all election long and we haven't heard a peep out of anyone for this. In fact, Obama's entire campaign is ONE HUGE SMEAR ADD because it lays all of the problems of the Bush administration's problems at McCain's feet though he has differed from Bush on many issues. Its funny how they're silent on this. It seems that McCain and Obama are held to two different standards

Ben Dribus: This will be my last response also.

You have to understand that we are voting on principles also. Barack Obama has an extremely liberal stance on abortion, is against traditional marriage, and will put in supreme court judges that will no doubt support his radical and socialistic philosohpies. By not voting for McCain we put Obama in office. Do you believe that babies should be able to die oustide of the womb? What about partial birth abortion? What about the indoctrination of our children through sex ed? These aren't just partisan issues to us. In our hearts these core issues overide the need for reformation of our party at this present time. You make a lot of sense--and I understand your point about striking while the iron is hot--but my overriding responsibility lies in the the issues that I stated above.

I understand your point in regard to the Hiter analogy as conveying the danger that could come through sacrificing one's principles in regard to an outcome that wasn't soley intened. I wasn't saying that your analogy was bad--it wasn't--I was just using the the circmstances of the analogy to drive home the point of what I was trying to convey through my previous posts. My point of conveyence in connection to the main theme of your analogy was lacking though--so touche' for calling me on it.

What else is their to say in regard to the protest vote--we may not have anything to reform if we vote a man into office who serves as a potential threat to our country's existence. I'm sorry--I don't want to wait for a third party to address these issues--by not addressing the issue McCain is sending a message that it is not relevant. He can address Obama's associations, the economy, and national security because all are relevant.

You and I just disagree in regard to the issue of the threat that Obama's associations pose and the responsibilities of our leaders to call him on it-- Barack Obama would be pulling up red flags in regard to these associations if he was a normal citizen applying for a security clearance.` According to our own government's standards he would be considered as a potential threat--and this is for a LIMITED amount of information. If he would be considered as a potential threat by our government for limited amounts of information, then why on earth would he not be considered as a potential threat for ALL OF OUR INTELLIGENCE, ALL OF OUR MILITARY STRATEGIES, AND POWER OVER THE NUCLEAR BOMB AND THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY ON EARTH. These issues are relevant according to our governments standards for issuing security cleareances--but unfortunately they don't apply this standard to our leaders--the people who can do the most harm.

I agree, Sean Hannity revealed himself as an idealog who did attempt to bring the party further to the left and did sacrifice his journalistic integrity during this election. I have been very outspoken in regard to Hannity, Limbaugh, and all of Fox News in regard to these issues.

With this in mind, he does deserve credit for exposing the Jeremiah Right Story and Barack Obama's other radical associations. I am pesonally disgusted by the medias attpempts to sweep Obama's radical associations under the rug. I wasn't validating what Hannity did earlier in the election. And I let me add, Obama met some resistance while speaking to the Jewish League earlier this year for his connections to an anti-Semite who has called for the destruction of Israel and has connections with the PLO. This wasn't reported until recently--and only by Hannity. This isn't anything new--PROVE THAT BARACK OBAMA DID NOT HAVE THE ASSOCIATIONS THAT HANNITY REPORTED ON AND I WILL ACKNOWLEDGE YOU AS BEING CORRECT.

PS: Good luck on your thesis--I'm sure you won't need it. I thought that maybe you were Obama supporter trying to get us to compromise our vote--but I now think that there is more to you.

    Horner, Bryan and Ben Dribus...

I absolutely agree with both of you!!!

At some point this DOES have to stop - you are right. WHY do we compromise our principles each election because we are so afraid of the other side? We will NEVER make the changes to our nation (to return to the vision of our founding fathers) unless we STOP THE MADNESS!!!

Stop being so fearful and trust in the God who breathed the Universe into being.

It is time to draw the line. No compromise. No McCain.

I am SO glad there are so many others out there like me. I've been hearing them come out of the woodwork in droves over the past week or so and it is encouraging to know that there are people who are willing to stand on principles rather than follow in line behind the GOP. (The same GOP that is consistently moving further and further to the left.)

Stand strong for your principles! Remember...GOD elects our leaders!

Vote for conservatives on Nov. 4th. TRUE conservatives. McCain is not one of them.

I know the Obama presidency is scary but so is a McCain presidency and I'll tell you why...Whoever gets elected is going to be blamed (just as Bush has been) for the mess the economy is in and the fix WILL not come in the next 4 yrs. If McCain should happen to win, he will not get re-elected and a democrat will. By then they will be soooo blaming everything on us that they would not dare vote another one in. If Obama wins, I don't believe he will be re-elected either because people are expecting him to be a miracle-worker and, in fact, he is just a great organizer...that's how he's winning. He has promised too many different things to too many people and could never make good on all these promises so there will be a lot of disillusioned folks on the democratic side. Enters Mike Huckabee...Populist appeal that can cross over to those disillusioned democrats who fell for Obama partially for his great oratoral skills and the way he could inspire and make them have hope for a better tomorrow. Mike Huckabee can do that same thing only he can ALSO deliver....If Obama wins, that leaves Hillary out (a huge plus for the republicans next go round). So....Obama winning may seem scary but sometimes things all work out to the best end result. Not saying I want him to win, but it is heading that way unless an upset happens soon...

If Obama is so great, why is Hamas trying to donate to him and why are they jumping up and down hoping he gets elected.

Why did a Saudi Muslim prince pay for his Harvard college?

Why did Obama kick off his senate campaign at a fundraiser at the home of an unrepentant American terrorist who bombed the Pentagon?

No matter how bad John McCain is, he can't be that bad.

John McCain has only asked for a couple million dollars of pork in 30 years.

Obama asked for $350 million in 350 days.

One thing about pork, I had to give up my car a year ago and have been riding the bus.

Congress sent $500,000 to Dayton, and the buses that were running an hour late and making legal secretaries stand on the street corner for an hour after work, immediately started running on time (they purchased some new buses).

    EVERYBODY WAS DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY!

    See . . . a little bit of pork isn't all bad.

Protest votes may have worked in the past.
I really doubt that they will have much effect today. We must put both hands in the dough and knead it and bake the loaf of bread now, now talk about how we will need it 10 years from now.

The Little Red Hen baked her own bread when no one would help her. She didn't whine and cry and wait to people came around to her way of thinking.

Thank you for your voice of reason regarding the bailout or rescue plan. No one is sure what will really help, and we have over 400 people in the House and the Senate trying to decide together and compromise to come to some kind of a rushed decision.

If we voted anyone out based on this one decision, we would have to vote them ALL out because they ALWAYS sneak pork into every bill.

I trust John McCain to cut taxes and put a moratorium on spending now.

I an confident that Barack Obama would put a huge vehicle of ever-expanding taxes and more bureaucracy and red tape that will cost 10 times more than 10 wars.

So, protest, if you think that will help the RINOs turn around, or you can vote a Solid Republican Ticket, and pray for our leaders, and call them or "God Forbid Even MEET THEM" and personally tell them how you feel.

The problem is Americans are not getting involved in the process.

We just take care of our daily needs and our families which is great, but we only call our leaders when they fail, but forget to praise them when they do good.

I just want to take this opportunity to join the many who have already expressed thanks to Pres. George W. Bush for keeping our country safe for the past 8 years.

Lori Stacey and Deborah in Dayton: It is silly to argue about Chuck Baldwin. He might be a perfect candidate, but he cannot be elected in 2008. I was around for John Anderson and Ross Perot, to say nothing of Ralph Nader. It would take years to build a rival party that could siphon off enough votes to pose a serious challenge to the established parties. And the only party that could take hold would be a party of the center, where the people are who have open, changeable minds. Can anyone say Vertical Politics?

  • Horner, Bryan

    10/06/2008 04:38 PM

    Ben Dribus,

I agree with your stand! I have said since March if the Republican Party can't nominate the right man, with the proper character, and ideas that will actually make a difference then they will not be getting my vote. How easily so many forget. The same TV and radio personalities that they are praising and siding with now are the same ones that were so slanted against the right candidate in the spring. They think that they can misreport, misquote, and misrepresent candidates in favor of “their boy” and then turn around and speak so much fear that it will force people to vote for that candidate in November. At some point this has to stop. As hard a time as it may be to do it a line has to be drawn.

Steve Goff, Deborah, Maxine, Jill Anderson, etc.:

I have enjoyed the exchange of ideas. After this post, I will have to take a break to work on my thesis, which has been languishing. Let me conclude with a few general thoughts. At the bottom I have included some specific words for Steve Goff, who was the last to comment on one of my messages.

It seems to me that the crucial difference between us is that my voting philosophy is based on principles, whereas your voting philosophy is based on outcomes. What I mean is that you are thinking primarily about what “will happen” if you vote a certain way, not whether or not a certain candidate meets your standards.

An example of this is Deborah, who originally supported the bailout. Her reasons were concern about what “would happen” (presumably to particular people she cares about) if the bailout was not passed. In contrast, my opposition to the bailout was based on principles: knowing that it was contrary to everything that made America great and that no good could come of it in the long run.

The origin of the struggle between outcome and principle in making decisions is the Garden of Eden, where the Devil told Eve what “would happen” if she ate the fruit in order to distract her from the principle of obeying God. He said, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

You are supporting a man who has taken a huge whack out of the First Amendment (McCain-Feingold), sued pro-life groups to stop them from running ads, refused to debate values during the election, and used machine party politics to disenfranchise the voters of Louisiana. You would never do this on principle, but you are scared of what “will happen” otherwise. This is ultimately because you don't trust God enough to follow His guidelines concerning who to yoke yourselves with, and feel He needs your help in getting the outcome right.

If everyone voted based on principle, we would not be in the mess we are in today.

    ***********************
Steve Goff: You have contributed a great deal to this site in terms of information and analysis. Usually I agree with you, but obviously not on this point. A few remarks:

    1. You say my Hitler analogy is bad because the German people knew of his anti-Semitism (Mein Kampf had been out for some years). But any analogy involves comparing two different things, and the merit of it depends on what point is being made. The only use I made of the analogy was to point out how bad the outcome can be if people are willing to compromise their standards in order to avoid what they perceive as a worse outcome. I don't mean that McCain is anything like Hitler, or that you are anything like a National Socialist for voting for him. But I do think you are wrong.

    2. You say “we can take care of the GOP in the near future.” This is a sadly futile form of wishful thinking. Parties that are successful are not reformed. Unless they lose, the GOP establishment has no reason to change. The same wishful thinking has been applied to the bailout with the idea to “bailout and then reform.” Nonsense. If reforms were not made then and there when the attention of the nation was mobilized to make them, they will never be made unless the perpetrators are voted out. It was merely a dodge to grab the cash without reforming anything.

    3. I am not “threatened” by McCain pinning his hopes on emphasizing Obama's associations, I am disgusted by it. It is the opposite of vertical politics, which is what Mike Huckabee's campaign was all about. Tell us what is good about you, not what is bad about the other guy. If you won't, it's because there's nothing good to say about you. I think that independent groups should be responsible for exposing Obama, but for McCain to focus on it reveals nothing but desperation and inadequacy.

    4. Sean Hannity is a pathological liar and hideous ideological parasite who profits by exploiting the concerns of social conservatives while working full time to undermine their influence for the benefit of the very financial interests who have gotten us in so much trouble. Where were you all last year when he was pushing Rudy Giuliani, who supported federal funding for partial-birth abortion? He did everything he could do to destroy Mike Huckabee's candidacy, turning his radio program in January, February, and March into a clearinghouse for unsubstantiated rumors and lies about our candidate in order to benefit Mitt Romney (Rudy had already gone down in flames). From start to finish, he did everything he could to ensure a pro-choice candidate on the Republican side. If you treat anything he says as anything but the yellowest form of propaganda, it proves that you have no idea what is really going on.

Radical Muslims Paid Obamas Way Through Harvard Law School

    http://doctorbulldog.wordpress.com/2008/09/24/radical-muslims-paid-obamas-way-through-college/

But new questions have been raised about Obama’s student loans and Obama’s ties to a radical Muslim activist who reportedly was raising money for Obama’s Harvard studies during the years 1988 to 1991.

The allegations first surfaced in late March, when former Manhattan Borough president Percy Sutton told a New York cable channel that a former business partner who was “raising money” for Obama had approached him in 1988 to help Obama get into Harvard Law School.

In the interview, Sutton says he first heard of Obama about twenty years ago from Khalid Al-Mansour, a Black Muslim and Black Nationalist who was a “mentor” to the founders of the Black Panther party at the time the party was founded in the early 1960s.

Sutton described al-Mansour as advisor to “one of the world’s richest men,” Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

Prince Alwaleed catapulted to fame in the United States after the September 11 attacks, when New York mayor Rudy Guiliani refused his $10 million check to help rebuild Manhattan, because the Saudi prince hinted publicly that America’s pro-Israel policies were to blame for the attacks.

Chuck Baldwin, Third Party Candidate, did not even announce his candidacy until April 10, 2008.

He did not participate in any of the debates and completely missed the primaries. He has never been a governor of a state.

Come on! We made fun of Fred Thompson because he announced his candidacy so late.

You have to participate in the primaries, the debates, and become vetted by the rough and tumble of the competition of the primaries to even think of getting more than .01% of the vote in the General Election because no one will know who you are.

Chuck Baldwin may try to convince you that God told him to get into the race after the primaries, but any serious candidate like Mike Huckabee will know that you get a lot of free media advertising and get put into the public eye by winning the Iowa caucus and taking a few primary states.

My recommendation for Pastor Baldwin is to run for Governor and prove to the country that he can cut taxes and run a state. He's only 52. He's behind the curve compared to Gov. Huckabee but he still has time to prove himself as a Governor and put himself in the media as a serious contender.

"Baldwin announced on April 10, 2008 that he would seek the nomination of the Constitution Party for the presidency at the party's convention on April 23-26 in Kansas City, Missouri."

Economists, such as former Federal Reserve Chairman Allen Greenspan, believe that if the Fair Tax is implemented it would bring back billions of dollars in capital and jobs from overseas within months. The Fair Tax will eliminate the ability of government to reward or punish constituents with the tax code. This will end the need for tax lobbying and the favoritism that is now shown to some industries and corporations

To those that are voting and praying for a McCain/Palin Victory ..... You will be encouraged to read this. It was in my inbox this morning. A true story that happened recently last month. This is about Pastor Mark Arnold of Covenant Christian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. God sent him on a mission to deliver a message to Gov. Palin at a rally with McCain when all odds were against him..... but God opened the door...... And it happened.... YES, God has his hand upon this lady ..... a modern day Esther. Read this article in its entirety and be blessed!!!
    ___________________________________________

This past Tuesday, the McCain / Palin Bus came through a little town called, Lebanon, Ohio. The LORD allowed me to go to the Rally giving them a message that He wanted me to personally deliver.

Sunday Night - a burden hit me that would only shake me to my knees - I prayed and wept for our Nation. Never has my heart been so broken before God. I literally interceded for these wonderful people who do not deserve all the hate against them. The GOD-Haters are going to try everything to stop them, but they will not succeed!

God is not pleased with the “bashing” in the News of this “Anointed” person. He has called her for this time! I promised God that I would pray and hold them up in prayer. I would “listen” out and be mindful of where they were. The following day is important in this time-line…because I didn’t even know until God spoke to me ........

    Angels in Flesh?

I truly Believe that Down Syndrome is a gift from God and the ones that have it are sent here for us whether it be angels in flesh or something,

Who is truly the ones with special needs, us or them? they have the love we lack and seem to know and remember things we can't.

*True Story that happen to me!!

I was leaving the hospital after visiting my bro. in law who had a stroke at 39yrs old (2 children)and was told if he made it he would never walk or talk again. This was very upsetting. but as I was walking out of the hospital they was this girl with Down Syndrome setting outside and as I was walking by she looked at me with a big smile and said Hi, and called me by my name. (My name is very uncommon) At that moment I felt a ease about my Bro.in law and he amazed the Docs.and recovered.

I believe This one story below by Coach Gene Stallings told and heard by every one in the USA could cut the abortion rate in half over night!
I Wish I had the money to play it for 30 minutes on prime time TV. maybe someone out there does!!

I don't think Mike was saying it is ALL Wall Street. There is greed and abuse both on Wall Street and Main Street. Even though I should not let someone take advantage of me, is it ok for someone to take advantage of me?
Not only are some of the CEOs of some of these companies fleeching "Main St" borrowers but they are fleeching their own employees.
It would do good for EVERYONE from Wall Street to Main Street to study Ecclesiastes especially chapter 5 verses 6-20.
The general idea I get combining these verses with others that I have read is that a man that gains his riches on the labor of others is never happy but a man who gains riches on his OWN labor is satisfied.

Ben Dribus: I certainly can't accuse you of not putting a lot of thought into your responses.

I understand completely where you are coming from. If The GOP would have moved left by choosing a pro-choice candidate I would have been left with a tough choice indeed. The choice would have been to vote to keep Obama out of power or allow the GOP to move further to the left--which would have blurred the distinction between both parties. The choice would have been between which was most destructive--choosing Obama, or allowing the party to shift.

Barack Obama's strategy is based on CHANGE due to the people's frustration with the Bush Administration. His approach is flawed in the sense that it automatically assumes that electing him would be the best choice simply because of Bush's failures. But there is such a thing as going from WORSE to EVEN WORSE. We can witness this in full display by noting the current Democratic Congress which has the lowest approval rating in history. This congress was elected because of the Republicans failures. Are we any better off?

You used an analogy of Germany electing Hitler by voting their conscience because they thought they were doing the right thing by voting against socialism. There is something that you missed though: they chose to ignore Hitlers anti-semitic history as witnessed by his writings and associations. By voting for him they chose a man with dangerous philosophies--and the world paid the price. In the same way by not voting for either party this year we chance putting in a candidate with past radical assoications--Did you watch Hannity's report tonight? Obama has ties with and has contributed money to Rashid Khalidi who has past PLO associations.

I understand your point though. The problem comes from having a lack of choice and having to choose from the lesser of two evils. At this point we are having to choose between two parties who are not fulfilling the will of the people and making decisions that are destructive to our country. But I reject your notion that partisan differences are manufactured by the parties to keep the Amercian people in bondage. Orwell was a tremendous writer, and he conveyed great truths--but it was fiction non the less.

The partisan issue of abortion is not manufactured. Neither is the issue of gay marriage or civil unions. Neither is The War on Terror. These are issues that the people demand our leaders take a stand on, not a contrived attempt of our leaders to divert the attention from their schemes. Social Conservatives will have to break ranks with the GOP eventually--or reform it from the inside--and you are correct that neither party has the answer at this point--but it would be a huge mistake to allow Barack Obama to win. This is not being a "dupe" or a "pawn" it is realizing that we need to reform the party while being able to prioritize our efforts in regard to what is best for the country at this present time--and at the present time Obama proves to be too much of a threat--he could be the final nail in our country's coffin. We can take care of the GOP in the near future--but for now we need to send the entire country a message in regard to what is and isn't acceptable in regard to leaders who seek elected office while having anti-American and radical associations--this is the short term. We take care of this first and then we move to the long term: reforming the GOP.

PS: It doesn't matter if Ayer's attacks were forty years ago. He tried to bomb our capitol and tried to kill innocent Americans. He has also stated recently that he wouldn't rule out doing it again. What if Hitler would have escaped Justice only to be caught forty years later? Would that make what he did any less evil or his current associations not relevant? Apply this scenario to Bin Laden. Why are you so threatened about McCain bringing up Obama's past associations?

  • Ben Dribus

    10/06/2008 12:09 AM

Deborah: Please read the following very carefully.

There is a nursery rhyme about an old woman who swallows a fly. Then she swallows a spider to catch the fly, swallows a bird to catch the spider, and so on. She makes her problem worse each time. I was invoking this rhyme to illustrate the situation where we accept worse and worse candidates from the Republican Party. The statement “I don't know why she swallowed the fly,” means that she should never have allowed the situation to start in the first place, just as we should never have compromised our standards to support candidates like John McCain.

The reason why I substituted in the names McCain, Obama, etc. was to illustrate that people who are willing to compromise their standards will vote for any candidate, no matter how bad, so long as the other candidate is worse (and a Democrat!). This is demonstrated by your own suggestion that I should rethink voting for O.J. instead of Obama (which was a joke of course). You have made numerous anti-Obama posts (with good reason!), yet if we introduce an even more sinister character (such as O.J.) you imply that it would be better to vote for Obama. Why not maintain your standards and vote for neither?

Consider this: if everyone followed my advice and refused to compromise, we would only have candidates like Mike Huckabee. If everyone supported the lesser of two evils out of fear of the other side, there is no limit to how bad the candidates could be. If the Democrats nominated the Devil, then the Republican establishment would be free to nominate Hitler without losing the votes of people who are willing to compromise out of fear of the other side.

Because I disagree with you on this, you are ready not only to believe me an Obama supporter, but doubt my Christianity, even though I have been posting on this site for a year in such a way as to make both my conservatism and my Christianity obvious. This is the sad result of having a frame of mind which cannot rest without marching off to do partisan battle every election cycle, cheering on the glorious (or not so glorious) leader of the cause and applying a ridiculous double standard to attack the other side and foster every negative rumor against them, both with and without merit. It makes you think anyone who doesn't support the ticket must be from the “other side.”

Since I share your values, I would ordinarily leave you alone. But partisanship itself has now become the problem. It sucks up all the air, stifling outside ideas and influences. It is currently impossible to win at almost any level without paying homage to one party or the other. Since the party systems themselves (and many, but not all, of the politicians) are corrupt, this is a huge problem.

People such as you, who form the moral backbone of the country, will have to be awakened to this and liberated from the clutches of partisanship. I do not mean that anyone should leave the party; indeed, it would be better if more people would become involved and try to move the party in the right direction. But the cartel of the two parties must be broken by withholding votes when their actions are unacceptable. People must take a sober view of both parties, admitting their own party's failures, and not constantly trying to demonize the other side.

I have no expectation that you will listen to any of this, but it is my responsibility to point it out, like the watchman in Ezekiel. If I don’t, I'm responsible for your mistakes as well as my own.

    Hi, Athol Dickson:

Your sons did not flip properties, my son did not flip properties, your nephews and nieces or your grandkids did not do anything, why are they all punished?

The "Nay" reason for the Bail-out is
those abusive people were asking the whole nation to put 100% of 1 trillion into a KNOWN-rotten investment before they ever TRY to explore other solutions or get some highly-qualified people together to draft alternative solutions.

If the people on the HIGH SEATS have ever put an effort to explore other solutions than just bailing-out and hold themselves accountible to the public, and decide this is the only solution, I can live with it. But they DID NOT EVEN TRY, all they want is to get us to LEGALIZE their robbery of $1 trillion dollars. It feels to me they have waited to the last minute so WE CAN HAVE NO CHOICE. That is a terrible plan to trick the whole nation into bailing them out. That is NOT RIGHT!

I live a humble life, I didn't flip properties, I didn't do anything stupid, so you think we should all get CORPORATE PUNISHED?

The PORK will be there anyway to get the bill passed on Monday. If I were there, I will get some PORK too, because who knows after that huge bailing out, my state can be left with anything or not.

I still believe Mike Huckabee is a good guy. He said what he believes in. And I don't think people vote for "No" because of Mike Huckakbee.

    Please have faith.

Please don't blame Gov. Huckabee for taking a moral stand against this recovery bill.

I was afraid that if we did not have the bill, it would plunge our economy into a recession.

However, I would never in my wildest dreams accuse Gov. Huckabee of resisting this bill and then causing Congress to sign a pork laden bill.

Gov. Huckabee believes it was a mistake to vote for the 2nd bill also.

EVERY bill CONGRESS signs is a PORK-LADEN bill!

However, Obama asked for millions of dollars of pork.

John McCain has never asked for a single dollar of pork.

It was perfectly reasonable for Gov. Huckabee to oppose this bailout because he had his own ideas about what should be done, which would do far more and cost far less. As far as sub-prime borrowers go, somehow I doubt that they actually pay any significant amount of income taxes in the aggregate. Thus, Main Street has a right to complain about the government mishandling our money when the people who caused this mess on the borrowing end contributed very little to the Treasury to begin with.

And I cannot blame the people who reached for mortgages they could not afford as much as those who gave out those mortgages. God may have created all people equal, but he did not endow them with the same intellect or education. Those on the upper rungs of the socioeconomic ladder have MORE responsibility for the welfare of the society than those struggling to get by.

    The Wall Street Rescue
The vote was approved 263 to 171. According to the vote tally, 172 Democrats and 91 Republicans voted for the rescue plan. Of those that voted against the plan, 63 were Democrats and 108 were Republicans. In comparison, the final vote tally on Monday’s vote was 205 to 228, with 140 Democrats and 65 Republicans voting for it. Of those that voted against it, 95 were Democrats and 133 were Republicans. The Democrats boosted their "aye" numbers by 32 from Monday, while it was 26 more from the Republicans.
    What does that tell us?

  • Dickson, Athol

    10/05/2008 07:44 PM

For some reason, everybody seems to have forgotten that it takes two to make a mortgage.

“Wall Street” did not force “Main Street” to take these subprime home loans. Millions of greedy house-flippers and envious keep-up-with-the-Jonesers DEMANDED loans they knew darn well they could not afford to repay, and now those same irresponsible people are acting true to form by refusing to accept responsibility for their part in this mess. All this whining about “Wall Street” makes about as much sense as a fat man blaming an ice cream parlor.

Meanwhile, Governor Huckabee practices his own brand of irresponsibility by telling us to blame the "Axis of Arrogance" who (gasp!) had the gall to give America exactly what it asked for. There are some gazillionaires in the financial business who milked the system and should be held accountable along with the rest of us, but Governor Huckabee used to be a preacher. He ought to remember a little something about taking the log out of your own eye first, so you can see to take the splinter out of your neighbor’s.

If the Governor and his ilk had not stirred people up against this bail-out bill the first time around, it would have passed last Monday WITHOUT all the pork, as he very well knows. Now along he comes again, pontificating about the very feed trough he himself helped to build. It’s nothing but shameful politicking…the same ol’ same ol’ that I once thought the Governor was going to help us stop.

I feel ashamed for ever believing in this man. I contributed $1,000 to his campaign for the RNC nomination, and I worked hard to get him votes. I helped secure the endorsement of a friend of mine who’s very famous in the evangelical Christian community. But enough is enough. If the Governor runs again in 2012 or afterwards, he can count me out.
