A Clear Threat

Illegal immigration is a clear threat to our country.  Terrorists who want to do our country harm can enter virtually unchecked through our porous borders-both southern and northern. And they can smuggle in dangerous materials capable of causing great destruction. Simply put, our unsecured borders are a national security threat.

But more than just terrorism, our unsecured borders are allowing many violent criminals to enter our country illegally. Violent gangs come
here to commit violent crimes and smuggle millions of pounds of cocaine, meth, heroin and marijuana, all brought through our unsecured southern
border.

People just can't understand why Congress can't get its act together and secure our borders.  To me it is just plain commonsense. We need to
secure our borders so we know who is coming into the country.

But politicians in Washington just aren't serious about securing our border.  First, they tried to pass off amnesty as comprehensive
immigration reform, which I am proud to say that I fought to stop. Now, Nancy Pelosi is blocking a bi-partisan bill that will make it tougher
for illegal immigrants to get across the border, find a job, and stay here once they get caught.

We have to secure the border. And we have to do it now.  Until we secure our borders, we will be vulnerable to terrorists and violent criminals
not to mention the impact illegal immigration has on our economy.

After the killing of the husband and 2 sons by an illegal alien who was protected by a sanctuary city, I feel it is past time for the Federal Government to take a stand and rid our country of sanctuary cities. No Federal taxes should be given to any city which gives santuary to illegals as many illegals are also felons in their own county. They should not be afforded any rights as they are not citizens and should immediately be sent back.
The ACLU should not be allowed to represent any of them nor any court give any protection to them. THEY SHOULD NOT GET ANY RIGHTS. We certainly wouldn't get any in their country! Thank you.

Madeleine, Rep. Graves: Thank you for shining a light on the terrible miscarriage of justice and reason that is our current immigration policy in this country.

This issue was brought home in the worst possible way recently here in the Bay Area. A Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) gang member shot and killed a father and his two sons in San Francisco, our lovely anti-Catholic, pro-felon sanctuary city. Better still, this person had killed before when still a minor, and without seeking clarification the juvenile system didn't tell ICE about his immigration status even though even their bed-hopping mayor said after the fact that felons werent supposed to be part of the shield.

Proof yet again that common knowledge isn't common and neither is common sense.

What is in the water over there that they will even shelter MURDERERS from deportation? It's enough to make you crazy, seriously.

Yes, there are people who climb the fence to bust thier butts to make a better life for themselves...but it isn't all of them, and I doubt it is more than half of them, which means hundreds of people with *other* criminal intentions cross the border annually.

If Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas are facing anything like what we deal with here in California, my prayers go out to them.

You best believe that if I went out and killed a man and his sons, I'd be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and would never again see the light of day, assuming I even got to keep my life, but I have that white skin deficiency.

Darn right I'm angry. I love California, it is a beautiful place, but it becomes much less so when our leaders can't be counted on to protect us from criminals just because they come from Mexico.

I would love to bring in all these yahoos calling for pity and amnesty for the poor illegal immigrants (I refuse to call them undocumented workers...REFUSE!) and have them stare over top of those three coffins at this man's widow and explain to her why these people are deserving of anything but our boot in their butts, sailing them back over the fence to home. Heck, I'd pay to see that.

Can I have my state back, please?

Thank you, Congressman, for keeping the emphasis where it needs to be - securing our borders. We can't do anything about the illegal immigrants within our borders until we do something about our borders. I'm sure you are aware of this, but securing our borders is another issue for which there is no silver bullet. I spoke with a lady just last week who had to leave her five preteen kids in Guatemala in order to come here to try to make a living. She would work 12 hours a day in her own country and barely earn enough money to buy a pound of meat. With conditions like these in Latin-American countries, we will not be able to decrease the demand of immigration into the USA, but perhaps we can work together channel the demands through facilitating legal immigration for honest and hard working individuals such as this lady I mentioned and many more that I have worked with. Thank you, once again, for keeping your focus what every American wants - security.

I must say that I am terribly dissappointed in our government for not securing our southern and northern border. This has caused us many problems and I got very upset when congress and the president were trying to give amnesty to illegal aliens through the immigration comprehension reform. This issue is also another reason why I'm hesitant to vote for McCain. It is time that we seal up the borders now!

Thank you for you participation in Vertical Day. We need someone to take control of the immigration issue and get the borders secure, first and foremost. Then, like Mike said, we need to get people to come here legally, registered so we know who is here. This is a major concern to me and one of the important issues, the other being health care. Thank you for your thoughts on this issue.

Congressman Graves. Thank you for your comment. Apparently you listen to the voice of the people on this issue, which is not the norm in Washington. The national problem with illigal immigration is rooted in the prevailing attitude that senators and members of congress and the president and the academic elitist--all of whom receive their salaries from the backs of American labor--are superior to rank and file citizens. The people have overwhelming made their majority voices heard. Yet our leaders continue to act on their obvious belief that their responsibility to their constituents ended when they were elected to office. Further, they appear to believe themselves more knowledgable and their opinions to be superior to the collective voice of the majority. OTHERWISE, issues like illegal immigration and gay marriage and abortion and judges legislating from the bench would have long since been taken care of, for the majority of Americans have clearly and loudly made their voices heard, but to no avail. Lawlessness runs rampant because our leaders are not accountable. It is an outrage, but it is the government we are saddled with today. All the talking in the world won't change a thing until we have a huge purging. The Washington sewer needs to be flushed.

To Mr. Bohemier: Thank you for the insight and for connecting the issue to a relevant problem in our economy. I further appreciate Madeleine Calabro's in-depth reflection and persuasive stance on the issue including calling those who would immigrate illegally to stay and take a stand...to change their own government for the better.

We need a fence along the entire Southern Border. All Border Security agents need to be able to enforce our immigration laws without red tape and fear of repercussions for doing their jobs. Also the mindset that illegals are not criminals is false. Anyone who comes in the country by breaking our laws is a criminal. Illegal Alien Criminals need to be deported. They are breaking laws by being here illegally . Illegal aliens do not have rights in the USA. They are not American citizens. Another issue is that the Democratic party wants the United States to become a 3rd world country. However, can we just go live and work in current 3rd world countries while breaking their immigration laws? Would we have rights in Mexico or Cuba or Somalia? Think not folks. We have recommended that for 10 yrs all borders are closed. During that time we when an illegal is caught they are given a choice to serve for 6 years in our military with honor and at the end of that time they'll have earned citizenship. If an illegal declines this offer, their picture is taken, they are put on a watch list and sent back to the country of birth. Amnesty is never an option. Amnesty rewards criminal behavior. Again if they are illegal they are already breaking the law which means they are a criminal. After 10 yrs. A fixed permanent number of around 50,000 immigrants can begin to start the process of citizenship. The ever rising number of immigrants is literally killing our country from the inside out.

Thank you, Rep. Graves, for bringing up the important, but oft hid, fact that amongst the multitude of illegal immigrants in America are violent criminals who have slipped through the border to do us, and our children, harm. Here in California we have violence rising from notorious South American gangs, gangs that exist on the sales and distribution of deadly drugs. These illegals even are using our Park system to grow their illegal drug crops on our own soil.

There is a HUGE difference between legal and illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants, for the most part, have come here to take part in American society, and are mot here just to lower American wages and send money back to their country. Legal immigrants are some of the strongest supporters of the American Constitution and American liberties, having left countries that fall short of the American Dream.

On the other hand, illegal immigrants, having decided our laws do not apply to them, are taking advantage of our tax-supported hospitals and schools, use counterfeit social security cards, drive without insurance or driver's licenses, and depress American wages by working for employers who want to avoid paying proper wages, Workman's Comp, health care benefits, and etc.. The same arguments claiming economic "benefits" from illegal immigrants working American jobs could be applied to the Old South and their slave labour plantations.

I can think of only one good excuse for illegal immigration: fleeing government oppression. In that case, you will not be sending money “back home” to bolster that economy, but you will seek to have your family flee to freedom with you. I would have wanted to flee Nazi Europe to Britain. I would have wanted to flee Soviet Europe to the West. If any of the illegal immigration is caused by government oppression beyond our border, then we need to launch an effort to help the people in those countries to remove their yoke of oppression, just like we did during the Cold War, including improving immigration access for those people.

But when illegal immigration is not fleeing from oppression, but is sneaking in to take advantage of our welfare system and economy and to funnel money “back home”, then we are harming both countries by allowing it to continue. It does us no good to have people living within our borders who thumb their noses at our laws. It does their country no good to have their population seeking slave-labour-wages abroad rather than forcing an improvement of the economy -- and government -- within.

The fact is, it is not the physical land of America that is magic and causes prosperity for natives and immigrants. It is the American system of republican democracy and limited government, it is the American Constitution, and the American Bill of Rights that create unlimited possibilities for a prosperous economy.

Stopping illegal immigration does not stop people from improving their own governments and their own lives. There are legal immigration routes for those who are fleeing oppression. But there should be no “open door” policy for those who ignore our laws -- or worse -- those who seek to destroy us from within. Border security is paramount to the safety and prosperity of our nation and our local communities. There should be no immigrants within our borders that our government has not personally vetted and welcomed in.

Thank you for your strong stand in defence of our nation.

  • Bohemier, Marc

    07/23/2008 06:50 PM

To Mr. Lawerence that can't seem to see a negative affect to our economy by all the illegals working here. I work in the construction trades and here in my area all that you see on job sites is the illegals. They do the work for a fraction of the price that skilled americans were getting for doing the same work. Now with all the cuts in labor that the general contractor is getting one would think that the price of your house would go down around $100,000.00 (the drop in labor cost that one contractor told me he saved by hiring illegals). But no, the contractor just made that much more on the house he built. That was $100,000.00 that would have been spent by the skilled tradesmen in our local economy. Instead most of what was paid out by the contractor was sent via Western Union to Mexico. Now this is just one contractor in one area. Multiply this by contractors nationwide and get an idea of how much wealth is being sent from our local economies to Mexico every day. It's not just a terrorist issue or a criminal issue but it is an issue of transferring our national wealth out of our borders. It's as bad as all the oil money we send to the middle east every day. We are in a terrible process of sending our wealth out of this country every day and on the other hand having to borrow billions from China to give our economy a stimulas here. Where is the sense in this? Let's do something about keeping our wealth in our borders. The first thing I see in doing this is the Fair Tax being passed. Second is putting an end to illegal immigration, and third is to get our hydrogen program going and switch over on how we power our cars and trucks. We are soon to be a third world country here and it's on us much faster than we know. We were the wealthiest country in the world and we can't stay there by sending our wealth to other countries around the world everyday. We are not a country that should even need a stimulas package to keep our economy going. This has never been heard of before here. Keep up the way we are going and there won't be a package big enough to keep us afloat. We need to quit shooting holes in the bottom of our boat now before we sink!

On the other issues posted here on Vertical Day, I agree. I am not sold, however, on illegal immigrants being so harmful to our economy. In America's history, there has always been a flow of immigrants and they have filled a necessary place in our economy. When these groups move upward another group is willing to fill this spot. Aren't we hurting ourselves by being so insular? Perhaps we do need to build a safe and secure border, but let us look to our history. Could we also revive an "Ellis Island" of sorts to welcome the poor and huddled masses who find little hope to survive in their native land? I agree that we need to do more than just build a secure border. Just as Africa matters...I would like to suggest that Mexico matters. We are our brother's keeper even if we don't like the present Mexican administration and its attitude.

    Rep Graves,

I want to thank you for not only speaking on this issue, but for fighting for our borders to be secure. I cannot believe that anyone in our government can't see the importance of securing our borders. I agree that it is a threat to our country because terrorists can get in just as easily as illegal immigrants.

I also think that illegal immigration is a drain on our economy. When you look at how many people are in this country illegally, and the money spent on programs that are in place to help them, that's a large amount of money.

When you have people who are in this country legally (whether they were born here, or came here legally), and the government can't come up with the money to help them if they need help, how are they coming up with money to help people that are here illegally?

I also agree with an earlier post that said there should be tougher penalties on companies that hire illegal immigrants.

    Keep fighting the good fight!

    Mr. Graves

You are right-on about our borders, but there are other problems at the root of the situation.
Americans must, once again, believe that honesty and hard work are a virtue instead of a disgrace.
One of the reasons that illegal immigrants are able to come here and get jobs is because employers who need blue collar labor cannot find willing and capable young people to fill the positions.
Also, people of means, who are most of the time professionals, want household labor, etc. done cheaply and are willing to hire illegal immigrants for the job. What a poor example. They are also the ones who have the power to protect their interest and keep the law on their side.
I'm afraid that the idea of being "honest" and doing the 'right thing' is a thing of the past. When this happens, lawlessness and chaos follows.
As for the legal immigrants, there are plenty of places for their service. America has always been a land of opportunity and that is a good thing. However, I do believe they should be willing to learn and speak English and blend with us in becoming 'one nation'.
It has been said, "If you are not a part of the solution, you are a part of the problem." We all need to be a part of the solution!

Read this month's issue of "Imprimis" from Hillsdale(.edu) College. It contains a great article, actually two (Professor Erler and Michelle Malkin), on anchor babies, citizenship, and our attitudes toward illegal aliens. EXCELLENT. The facts are on our side.

  • Lisa

    07/23/2008 04:25 PM

We need to do more than secure our borders. We need to take away everything that brings illegal immigrants here. If we punish employers who hire them, there will be no jobs for them and they won't come. If we stop allowing "anchor babies," they won't come.

Go to NumbersUSA.com to tell Congress to get tough on illegal immigration.

    Rep Sam Graves,

You would have thought that since 9-11; the securing of our borders would have been paramount. This continuing lip-service and no-action .... well, lets say that "enough is enough" ..... Just get the fence built and keep it monitored! Pelosi's politics is a disgrace to the human race and the rest of the like-minded.

Thanks for all that you are doing Senator Sam Graves ......... Jill Anderson

All True! But don't fool yourself or others. Boarder security is insufficient. We must deal with the illegals here and those who hire them and shelter them (and those government agencies that give them drivers licenses, access to medical care, access to education, access to housing). it must be a coordinated war against the invading hoards! And, don't forget Mexico which has taken an official stand against US sovereignty. Mexico must be penalized for every illegal found here.

Yes, a clear threat indeed. That should be one of the House's priorities right now -passing harder laws on immigration. Hopefully, if we re-elect and get more supporters of it in the house this election, like yourself, then a law will pass.

Greater fines and penalties for those hiring illegal immigrants would help also. Remove the incentive for them to be. Then more time and resources could used to find the illegals who would harm us.

Careful talking about terrorists coming across our borders unchecked. Mike Huckabee was laughed at and ridiculed for saying pretty much that same thing.

However, I happen to agree with you that the border has to be secured and monitored. If we do nothing else in regards to immigration, securing the border is of the utmost importance.
