Vertical Day is coming this Wednesday.
We expect a dozen of the Huck PAC endorsed candidates to participate. Each of them has been asked to send us their thoughts on the issues that matter most to them. We will add these posts to the our special homepage at www.huckpac.com from 12PM-12AM ET.
I am also hoping to add 8 special guests. Today I am asking for your ideas America on the following issues:
-How would you control spending in Washington?
-How would you make America energy independent?
-What would you do to improve our education system?
-What would you do to improve our health care system?
-What sort of tax reform do you think America needs to boost our economy?
-What steps would you take to promote conservation and good stewardship of the environment?
If you have an idea or a solution to one of these issues, please submit them here. Please keep your blog posts to no longer than 6-8 paragraphs if possible. Please provide your name and where you are from with your submission. We will choose 8 responses from the ideas submitted and include them on our special Vertical Day page alongside our participating candidates.
Your ideas are important. The way forward on many of these issues will also need to come from outside Washington and our state governments. They will come from individuals making a difference on a local level in their hometown, school system or in their own home and with their family.
So if you have an answer to one of the questions above and want to participate in the process please submit your answer here.
Thanks for all you do and please remember Vertical Day is Wednesday.

1) For all of you Christ followers who may be unaware of this Christian ministry helping other Christians with their health care needs, please allow me to suggest you look into the Christian Healthcare Ministry or Medi-Share that has the same mission. They are both providing the biblical solution to health care costs.
www.chministries.org for the Christian Healthcare Ministries. They have approx 62,000 members and in the past 15 years these members have voluntarily contributed more than $450 million to assist each other with medical costs.
2) Regarding Energy dependence. Our main concern should be that not only should the automobile industry be strongly encouraged to build more fuel effecient vehicles (Toyota, Honda, Kia, etc are doing it) but look to see the connection between them and the oil companies that have been receiving HUGE profits at our expense.
Our colleges have departments of higher learning that should be encouraged with prizes to students that create more energy efficient designs. Bio fuels can be made out of other things besides corn ya know.

Just one more thing .... Type II Diabetes does not necessarily play favorite to obese people. My husband was skinny and came down with it and also was unaware of this disease in any of his family members. We just wish our Doctor would have did his job and informed us of at least one out of three annual check-ups that his blood sugar was borderline, then we could have started cutting down on the carbs. If there is any of you out there that never have your blood sugar checked, then you need to because it can be borderline and if unchecked you can come down with full blown diabetes. You do not want that! As I said before; millions are walking around with diabetes and/or borderline diabetes and they do not know it. (according to the stats I have repeatedly heard)

The Tax Reform we need is the FairTax! Thank you, Gov. Huckabee, for making this issue part of your campaign.
The FairTax would get rid of income taxes, and let us keep our entire paycheck.
Here is an outline of the FairTax from fairtax.org:
The FairTax:
•Allows you to keep 100 percent of your paycheck, pension, and Social Security payments.
•Frees up the time wasted on filling out cumbersome IRS forms.
•Wipes out the income tax code and shuts down the IRS.
•Makes taxation of income unconstitutional by repealing the 16th Amendment.
•Exempts all taxpayers from federal taxation up to the poverty level, through a monthly rebate.
•Ensures that all Americans pay their fair share of taxes.
•Dramatically lowers tax rates for low-income and middle-income Americans.
•Makes taxes visible by eliminating hidden income and payroll taxes in consumer prices.
•Enables families to save more for home ownership, education, and retirement.
•Protects and ensures the funding of Social Security and Medicare.
•Leaves unchanged the amount of money raised by the federal government.
•Makes American products more competitive overseas. How? This tax system is the most researched, and I think you'll agree, the best tax reform plan. It's called the FairTax.
The problem is the current income tax code.
A. The current tax code is unfair, costly, and unreasonably confusing.
•Because the tax code is so complex and easy to evade, many of us pay more in taxes per year than we should! The IRS estimates that over 40 percent of Americans are out of compliance with the current tax code! This makes the rest of us pay about 30 percent more in taxes.
•Over half of American taxpayers seek professional help simply to prepare their returns. And according to Money magazine, chances are 99 percent that you will pay someone to file an incorrect return!
•Compliance with the tax code is not only very difficult and complicated consuming a total of 6 billion hours, but unreasonably expensive as well. It is estimated that it costs taxpayers $265.1 billion for tax filing, tax record keeping, and tax reduction advice. That's just shy of $900 for every man, woman, and child in America! We have taxation without comprehension!B. The current income tax code unfairly hampers personal financial opportunity.
•When citizens are taxed on their earnings and on what they produce, hard work is discouraged.
•The current income tax code inhibits economic growth, capital formation, and, most importantly, job creation.
•The current income tax code punishes personal savings and investments, and sometimes these are unfairly subjected to double and even triple taxation.C. The current income tax code tax is grossly unfair to all wage-earning Americans.
•Payroll taxes are taken out of our paychecks, and we all have no control or choice over when we pay or how much we pay in taxes. They are deducted from our paychecks before we can save or spend them.
•The payroll tax is the most regressive and unfair feature of our current tax system. The current payroll tax applies to the first dollar of wages earned, effectively stifling the most important tool to improve one’s economic well-being.D. The current tax system allows for massive loopholes encouraging politicians and lobbyists to pick winners and losers.
•The tax code is filled with loopholes that are manipulated by high-priced lobbyists for their clients and by other special interests.
•The complexity of the current income tax code is an open invitation to those with the means to manipulate the tax code.
?There are more lobbyists registered in Washington, D.C. for taxes than for any other issue. The solution is the FairTax.
The FairTax is fair to all Americans and simple to understand. Under the FairTax, all wage earners keep 100 percent of their paychecks and Social Security and Medicare funding are more secure. The FairTax frees up financial opportunity by restoring choice in spending, encouraging savings and investment, and dramatically reducing tax evasion. With the elimination of 90 percent of compliance costs, over $238 billion is restored to the economy. The FairTax offers an unprecedented opportunity for lower- and middle-income wage earners to get ahead, to save to buy a house, to educate themselves and their children, and to save for a dignified retirement. All Americans, regardless of their income level, are better off with the FairTax.
•Everyone is subject to the same consumption tax rate (23 cents of each dollar of spending) with no exceptions and no exclusions, and those least able to share in the cost of government carry no federal tax burden at all.
•The FairTax increases individual purchasing power, making it easier to get ahead financially by eliminating:
othe individual income tax
othe payroll income tax
othe estate tax and the gift tax
ocapital gains taxes
othe alternative minimum tax
othe self-employment tax
othe corporate income taxThe solution we propose involves two actions:
•Passage of legislation that institutes a single-rate FairTax on all final sales of new goods and services. This tax becomes the chief source of revenue for the United States government, replacing all federal income and payroll taxes, yet generating the same revenue. The legislation provides for a tax rebate equal to the consumption tax paid on essential goods and services. The rebate ensures that no American pays tax on the purchase of necessities.
?A constitutional amendment (HJR 16) that repeals the 16th Amendment and makes a federal income tax unconstitutional.

One of my greatest concerns is the educating of our children, since they are the future of the country. Also, we have an obligation to our children before almost anything else.
These are my thoughts:
"Improving Our Education System
What has gone wrong? Since 1963, when the Supreme Court denied the rights of students to pray the Lord's Prayer or recite Bible verses in public schools, there has been a definite, measurable decline in the public education statistics in every area. We trail the world too often in science, math, and other scores, but most troubling is the social and spiritual decline of our children.
We cannot leave God out of the public square or out of our children's minds without it resulting in the secularization of society and moral chaos. Our founding fathers knew this when they said that teaching religion was required to make democracy work. Alexis de Tocqueville in 1830 noticed how "every child was taught...the doctrines and evidences of his religion, the history of his country, and the leading features of its Constitution." We need a return to such teachings to raise well-rounded children, beginning at home and supported by our schools.
William Bennett, in his book, The Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, illustrates our problems with a chart outlining the top disciplinary problems of 1940 and 1990.
1940 1990
Talking out of turn --- Drug abuse
Chewing gum --- Alcohol abuse
Making noise --- Pregnancy
Running in the halls --- Suicide
Cutting in line --- Rape
Dress-code violations --- Robbery
Littering --- Assault
The problems of our schools have become the problems of our society at large. To correct these problems, I believe we must examine where we went wrong and try to correct these problems at the source. Our courts have changed over the years, from first acknowledging the place of religion in education, to secularizing the school system, to now being hostile to religious rights.
My recommendations on improving our education would include the following:
1. School Choice: Place the power back in the parents' hands of what they believe their children need. This would include government taking a hands-off approach to home-schooling, as well as allowing more freedom for parents to choose alternate schools that they know would benefit their children.
2. Decentralization: The school consolidation trend has been damaging to the morals, safety, and accountability of teachers and students. Switch the trend back to smaller, community-based schools where parents feel they have more of an interest and responsibility, while reducing the federal government's control and coercion.
3. Safety: If Public Schools are required because of Compulsory Education laws, let them be places of safety, primarily, for children, as well as including a time for Voluntary Prayer. Education is void if it excludes the moral and spiritual; in fact to educate a child without moral standards is to educate an immoral or amoral child. We need to make sure our teachers, also, are moral and supportive of the religious teachings of the home, and we need to reward those teachers who do an excellent job of teaching.
4. Teaching unrevised American history, law and government, and the Constitution and Declaration of Independence need to be the part of any schooling for every child, as well as for every immigrant desiring citizenship.
Until we correct the problems of religious freedom, we are powerless to correct discipline and moral problems. Until there is order and inner contentment, no other real learning may take place."
I would encourage all of you on Vertical Day to consider what would be best for America. Share it here or click on the above link and express your views to the HuckPAC.
God Bless America today,
GRACE in Kansas, PRAYING

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been called the Crown Jewel of the Executive Branch of the Federal government, but it needs to go in a dramatically different direction. For many decades, it has been run by senior academic physicians who represent the medical establishment of this country. Most of these men and women have been highly intelligent and honorable people. The problem is, however, that physicians are trained to focus on structural biology; that is, with the search for genes and proteins involved in disease states, and the development of drugs that can combat diseases presumed to be genetic in origin. This reductionistic, two-dimensional approach is a natural consequence of their medical school training as diagnosticians. They are trained to think of disease as a collection of signs and symptoms, not as the end result of patterns of interaction of the individual with his external environment that occur over long periods of time. For many decades, for example, few physicians believed that diet or exercise played any role in the development or reversal of disease. It is finally recognized that this view was wrong and misleading.
Another area of external influence on health that academic physicians have tended to shun is that of stress. The public seems to understand that stress is important in health and disease, but this concept, if used at all in medical research, has very limited meaning, whereas, in fact, the effects of stress on neural, hormonal, immunological, and respiratory activity are widespread, and render individuals susceptible to chronic diseases of many kinds. These interactions are only dimly understood, and stress physiology needs to be nearer the center of medical research in the future.
Our country can no longer afford the medical orientation of waiting for disaster to strike, and then calling in the doctor for interventions, usually late in life, that make health care costs soar. The personal experience of Mike Huckabee in eliminating his own diabetes via exercise and weight loss is proof of the value of behavior in the prevention of disease. While the NIH pays lip service to alternatives to the reductionistic model, there is, unfortunately, a conflict of interest in medicine about the desire to understand disease causation and prevention, in part because this would lead to reductions in the profits for the pharmaceutical companies who are its natural partners.
In summary, a renewed focus on functional, as opposed to structural, biology is long overdue at the NIH. It will not happen as long as the traditional medical model remains dominant. New programs in medical schools or graduate professional schools are needed that equip young investigators with a blend of skills that include training in anatomy, physiology, and molecular biology (that physicians learn) together with training in the philosophy of science and methods of experimental science. Moreover, the NIH will need to replace the suffocating influence of the "protocol" concept (in which nothing can be done there without prior approval of a committee) with an attitude of trust that enables proven investigators to pursue the subject matter where it may lead. From this will come the breakthroughs that can lead to an understanding of basic principles that determine the development of chronic diseases, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, among others.
Until then, we will continue to see very large, very expensive randomized clinical trials of new drugs that substitute for the basic research that needs to be done in order to justify the confidence of the Congress and the people of this country who have so generously funded the work at the NIH.
If we can become energy independent in 10 years, we can certainly make great strides over that time towards reducing the health care costs that threaten to inundate our nation with debt it cannot afford. But only if we do the right kind of studies at the NIH.

I believe Mike is asking for our help on specific issues that are of broader concern to the electorate than those issues of specific concern for his base of social conservatives and evangelicals. These candidates are politicians, after all, and have to address concerns of those who are not necessarily social conservatives.
Since we've already had a couple of polls to identify our priorities, I believe Mike is trying to address concerns that will help in an election. I give Mike a lot of credit asking for our input on several issues.
Our health care system is broken in this country with so many people lacking insurance. To say that this is off the CONSERVATIVE agenda for some reason is to welcome a well deserved DEFEAT on election day, for ignoring this terrible plight of so many people who are supposed to be represented and are asking for leadership. I suppose the only ones who may not need medical insurance are Christian Scientists who do not believe in disease.
To ignore the environment and our lagging education in this country, is to say that there are no CONSERVATIVE answers to these problems, another losing position on election day.
Instead of acting frustrated and criticizing Mike, please be constructive with your comments and suggest other issues you'd like to give your ideas for solutions on, as many have already done on this blog. It might play better

The rising cost of health care is of great concern to all Americans. My husband owns his own business and we have individual health care. For us and our daughter it costs over 1500.00 a month! And it still doesn't cover so much! Something has to be done to get this under control and I agree totally with the fact that we should get more coverage for preventative care instead of waiting for serious illnesses that are much more expensive to treat.

Mike,
What America suffers mainly stems from what could be called a lack of discipline. We need to restore proper discipline to our society in these three key, encompasing areas.
1. MORAL DISCIPLINE
[so called 'social' discipline, perversions, immorality, addictions, greed etc]
2. FISCAL DISCIPLINE
[eg. banking bad lending practices, greed, such as the deregulation/consolidation of banking markets type of greed, govn't sponsored care vs family responsibility/accountability, nofault/accountability divorce, etc.]
3. GOVERNMENT DISCIPLINE
[expanding govt, more bureacracy both peopl-wise and red tape-wise, less original freedom, judge/lawyer discipline, i.e. the Florida supreme court striking down the law on marriage ,etc.]
It's all about discipline. Christianity without discipline is not Christianity. Likewise, a sound society without good discipline is not a good society. Amen?

Spending is probably the biggest issue facing our country and it seems many Americans do not get this.
The FairTax and ending "pork" spending will not solve this as the GAO has said numerous times. The FairTax is like fixing your broken TV as your house burns down. You have to fix the bigger problem before you can invest in the smaller ones. The biggest problem is that HHS, DOD, and SSA are huge expenditures and not to be cut by 40% along with cuts of at least 10-20% for the other agencies so that our spending is at a reasonable level. Second, as the GAO recommended, we need to raise taxes. While and unfair solution, there really is no other way without cutting spending by 75% which would cause a collapse of our economy into a depression. Now, raising taxes on the middle class would be like getting blood from a turnip. The only way to raise taxes would be on the rich which is greatly unfair but needed if we are to sustain as a country. Americans can't afford to live in the now and have to look long term.
The GAO has been saying the same thing for years and is the only unbiased body speaking on the issue. Cut spending, raise taxes. It might not be fair...but it is the only way.

Control Spending and Tax Reform
One of the ways to consider controlling Government Spending should be to do what we used to do that worked. Start decreasing Government by going back to allowing (American Only) private companies to bid competitively on jobs government needs done but shouldn’t be doing. There should only be checks and balances to avoid corruption.
Another is fix the Prison System, we need to go back to the Chain Gang principle, insuring that every prisoner works to support themselves and pay their debt to society. Law abiding citizens shouldn’t have to pay them by giving paid vacations to criminals in free food, housing, medical and education. No wonder so many are repeat offenders. If they refuse to work, they shouldn’t eat, like the rest of us.
The same should be for welfare programs. Stop promoting illegitimacy and abandonment and promote healthy families, offering training and SHORT Term Financial Aid to both parents of children, if they stay together. Add further discounts for married parents. Instead of a free flow of unlimited Aid, keeping them stuck.
Education and other Government workers who work for the people, should not be allowed to pay Tax Payer money, to private Unions who in turn give our money to Candidates of their choice only. This should be illegal, because it’s forcing us the Tax payer to pay for a Candidate we may not support but will guarantee higher pay to increase Union dues, despite having the worst record in services like Education in American history.
SOCIAL Issues; under no circumstances should Tax Payers be forced to fund projects like Abortions or Stem Cell Research, which is morally objective to many citizens. Those should be Health Care Issues, of which the Government should butt out (except to decide on human rights issues including for the unborn). The Governments job should be to regulate, to make sure all Americans are offered protection and fairness. Government should refrain from being a massive Corporation like a Socialist nation and stick to regulating, instead of owning.
Lastly, Government should stop using Tax money, to pay for pet non-profit charitable causes of Politicians choices. Instead we need to go back to allowing American Citizens real Tax breaks for giving to their favorite charities. Today many citizens pay the Government and their Tithe, and get little or no more Tax breaks than others who don’t. With a Social Security crisis, our money is often given to foreigners to fund things like Condoms and/or Abortions and their continuous welfare needs. Taking care of the poor has always been the Churches job. And private enterprise allows a market to teach a man to fish and farm. Tax Payers should be allowed to decide individually where best to put our charitable donations. I rarely agree with liberal Government choices.
I guess I’m more conservative than I realized. Hope it helps. Thanks for asking and listening. God bless you. Olga Hermann

The best way to handle three of our nation's most dire problems (spending, taxes, and the economy) at once is to pass the Fairtax. I have been strongly supporting this for nearly three years, and the more I learn, the more I see how much it will help our country and, honestly, how much our economy needs it. The United States has changed from the land of the free to the land of the taxed, and the Fairtax will solve this problem.

Improving our education system definitely does begin in the home, with the parents. Homeschooling families should be promoted among conservatives and recognized as a great step toward producing more intelligent, moral, environmentally-aware, GOOD people who can make America a better place! I agree with Captain Oblivious that homeschoolers should be given a chance at things like art, music, sports, etc. We parents can only do so much. We need the community to help us give our kids the well-roundedness that they can provide through extracurricular activities that tend to be expensive or unavailable for homeschoolers.
We also need to educate America on the use of herbs. In our day, it is hard to find people who know how to treat diseases naturally. We would be more self-sufficient, healthier, spending less money--WAY LESS--on doctors if we simply put more effort into using God-given herbs that have been effectively and safely used for centuries before drugs. Let's leave the doctors and drugs for the more serious cases and start to educate ourselves on how to deal with simple things like colds, flus, broken bones, skin infections, poisonous bites, headaches, earaches, etc., etc. with herbs, which can be done very cheaply. Let's also shut down all the fatty, life-destroying fast-food chains that promote unhealthy lifestyles in Americans. We are FAT and we are dying because of our bad eating habits. We need to start eating healthy, naturally-grown foods again and this will also save us tons of money.
American conservatives should think about such things and make changes in their lives that reflect their concern for our future. These are indeed conservative issues! Let's stop putting the blame on hospitals, doctors, teachers, the government, and start doing what we can in our own communities and homes that will make a difference!

One more thought on our power grid energy for our homes, The GOV. sent out coupons for dig. TV converters, Just think if they would have did the same thing for the new low wattage light bulbs for the poor, I think every one needs to switch over, I did a few years ago one bulb at a time and it made a real big difference on my power bill and the bulbs last for about 3yrs for me. I even took my 400 watt nightlight apart and bypass the transformer and put in a 75watt bulb that puts out the same as a 200watt Reg. bulb, Now remember this light shins around 10 hours on average for every 24hr day. I kidd you not I brought my power bill down by 40%, ...... I can burn every light in my home and only be using 170watts, that's almost the same as just two Reg. 75watt bulbs. Everyone should switch right now. I'm not that much for Gov. handouts
but this would save more energy for the power grid then any other single thing, plus I understand its a little costly for someone on fixed income to change all there bulbs over. Something to think about. -

Spending in Washington: Full disclosure to the public on bills. Removing pork,
downsizing staff (just like they do in corporate America), & eliminate last
minute additions to bills without full review. Elected officials need to be
held accountable on how they are spending our money. Watching all the
questioning to the oil company CEO's absolutely made me ill! Here are these
people who could care less about how much of our money they spend on ridiculous
items drilling the private sector on how much money they are making...come on,
how much sense does that make. The oil companies are making money and here D.C.
is how many trillions of dollars in the red??? THAT'S JUST NUTS! Remember,
government has never produced a good or service.
Energy Independence: Drill Here, Drill Now!!! Continue research on alternative
fuel sources. Nuclear power plants.
Improving Education: School Vouchers!!! We need to make schools compete, just
like in "Corporate America". Competition works!
Improving Health Care: Tort reform will assist with this. Really, America has
the best talented health care professionals the world has to provide. This is a
very in-depth issue and there is a lot of abuse in this industry, by patients
and doctors in many cases. A lot of our problem is the welfare abuse. I feel
if you get something you should give something in return, be it money or a
service.
Tax Reform: That's simple...HR 25 The FairTax!!!!!!!
The Environment: Another in-depth issue. I don't believe in Global Warming,
but feel we should preserve the beauty that God has graced us with. I really
feel this is best dealt with through non-profit organizations. After a great
deal of scrutiny these organizations that help preserve the environment should
be given certain government grants. I don't believe there should be a bunch of
new government mandates on autos, etc. because the companies will provide what
the public demands. And that is fuel conserving vehicles while still providing
comfort, power, and room. -

Melissa Green and others posting about diabetes--
During the 70s and 80s, people who wanted to eat healthy food bought into the current wisdom that red meat was EVIL and a diet very heavy in carbohydrates--so long as fat was drastically reduced--was the way to go. So now, many of us are battling obesity and type II diabetes. We did enjoy all that pasta, though.
I should have listened to earlier wisdom about a balanced diet limiting both carbohydrates and fats and including lots of fruits and veggies. (I remember that advice from health/science class in the late 50s--fifth or sixth grade.)
At any rate, now I'm leary of "current wisdom" regarding things like global warming. I will live a balanced life and do my best to be a good steward, but I won't live in fear.

I just sent this email to Gary Bauer, because I heard that he wants to know who will be deal makers and deal breakers for VP for John McCain.
Email Gary Bauer at garybauer@cwfpac.com
Mr. Bauer,
I heard that you have been asking supporters what they think of John McCain's Vice Presidential pick.
For me personally, Mike Huckabee would be a deal maker and I would definitely vote for John McCain if Mike Huckabee was the V.P.
Mitt Romney would be a deal breaker, and I would definitely NOT vote at all and would let Obama be chosen President if Mitt Romney is on the ticket. McCain campaign insiders have admitted to David Broder of the Washington Post that John McCain has expressed disdain for Romney both publicly and privately and believes that Rommney is a serial flip-flopper and devoid of strong convictions.
In all the debates, Mike Huckabee and John McCain got along very well, but Mitt Romney picked fights with both of them. We could tell that Huckabee and McCain got along and that neither one of them appreciated Romney's vitriolic unwarranted attacks.
Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Bobby Jindal, Michael Bloomberg, and Rob Portman would all be dealbreakers for me also. They are simply either not conservative enough or tied too closely with this administration.
Mike Huckabee won all the eastern swing states and the Bible Belt states, and has a huge grass roots following. Gov. Huckabee has 10-12 years executive experience running a government, yet he is not tied to this present administration and is not a Washington insider.
Mike Huckabee is an excellent public speaker and never has to use notes. He has been faithful to his wife for over 31 years, and will be a good role model for our children and grandchildren. Everyone that I have spoken to in Arkansas says they loved Gov. Huckabee when he was in Arkansas.
Democrats and Republicans alike respected Gov. Huckabee. Gov. Huckabee was truly a public servant, and he had a plaque hung on the wall with a new photo every month of one of the citizens of Arkansas, with a sign that said, "The Boss." Mike Huckabee always knew that he was a servant.
I think Mike Huckabee would complement John McCain very well.

> On education: i ran into a friend last week and we got into a discussion on poletics. What began as a FairTax conversation spilled over to something I'd been noticing about our schools. Mike Huckabee has been advocating re-establishing music programs in our schools. I say that high schools should still be teaching industrial arts, wood and metal shop, etc. They aren't taught in schools here anymore. I was told due to costs. These classes allowed young men to learn where they would apply math skills, learn to read plans etc. The other end of the excuses I've been given is that they can get these classes in community college. So much for that when they don't graduate because they failed math. Next we got into what I'd heard about American Government being only an elective course. When I went to high school American Government was required and had to be taken in the senior year after passing American history in the Junior year, otherwise you could not graduate. we had about 6 weeks spent on our Constitution alone! Now it's just an elective course. I asked the question why? My friend replied in what could be an obvious truth. "That lobbyists of other countries had bought influence to have our students dumbed down so that their countries could compete with ours". Sound crazy? Sure fits the results!

Gotta put my tuppence in--
To improve education:
First, put the reins back into the hands of parents and communities. Education will benefit most from strengthing the family. Pass a marriage protection amendment. Reform welfare to enable two parent households to become self-supporting and remain stable. Reinforce the vital importance of the father's role in the family and in student success. I wish we could shut down media entertainment that glamourizes adultery and ridicules parents-particularly fathers. Kids from stable two-parent families are far more likely to achieve their academic potential.
Abolish the federal Department of Education.
The highest level of authority for education should be at the state level.
Mandate tax vouchers to allow parents to spend their tax dollars on the education they choose for their children, including transportation to the school of the parents' choice. Home school parents should have free access to public school facilities to enable home schooled students to participate in music, drama, sports, etc., as well as to community and faith-based programs.
Maintain a national standardized testing facility to provide a nationwide standard individual schools and home school families can access and use to measure students' progress. Students who choose to take these tests and who excel both on the tests and in other demonstrable ways should be provided whatever they need to further their education. Funnel the money now being spent in support of the federal Education Department into individual scholarships and give it to the states for distribution to community scholarship programs.

Melissa Green,
Well said! This is a sore subject with me. Those that have Type II diabetes is rampant in our nation and they say millions more that have it and do not know they do or are borderline. This disease seems to touch about every family or friend I talk to including mine. It should have been caught in my husband's case but this physician (cardiologist) never bothered to pick up on it on the test results. He was borderline for a few years or he could have changed that with diet and exercise before it became full blown. I had no knowledge of what the reading of borderline blood sugar was suppose to read. I thought that was why we went to a physician to inform us. There is so much neglect and greed out there. It is heartbreaking thinking about all the side-effects from these drugs. We know that there are some fine physicians out there that really do care about their patients but for this family they seem to have been a rarity. Yes, we know that these drug companies do not want any cures. For the love of money is the root of all evil..... Yes, personal responsibility is very key .... got to look out for yourself because no one else is for the most part.
You covered it all so well, we definitely are in need of all the changes as you describe them. Cost is important but Quality is vital.
God bless you and your daughter. -

When considering solutions to address what steps to take to promote conservation I believe we should emphasize three things without which no one in their right mind will participate.
1. The solution needs to save people money immediately--not at some fuzzy possible future date or by a tax credit next April 15.
2. The solution needs to be free or inexpensive so anyone can participate.
3. The solution has to be easy for the average person to accomplish.
Also--of the posts above, 9 had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of discussion. Being a maverick is all well and good, but I dislike wasting time slogging through off-topic philosophical opinions.

> There is an excellent book out right now that explains our economic problems. Everyone who reads these posts should buy a copy and read it. The republican party should adopt it's ideas as part of their platform. If the U.S. can make the changes outlined in it we will again rise to greatness. It is called "Trading Away Our Future" by Raymond, Howard, and Jesse Richman. The FairTax gets a lot of good attention. You won't here about this book in the mainstream media though.

Gov Huckabee,
I wanted to give you my thoughts on Healthcare. I was with you 100% on your stance with Healthcare and I do believe that it will be a big issue in the upcoming election. Our Healthcare costs are going to skyrocket next year and I know we are not alone. I have told you this before, but I will do it again. I have a 6 year old daughter that was dx with Type 1 diabetes when she was 19 months old. In the last 4 and a half years I have learned so much. I believe that the focus of our Healthcare system is in the wrong place. There is a law on the books that really bothers me. It is the one that says you can only CURE a disease in America with a drug. The reason it bothers me, is it gives ALL the power to our drug companies. It is the reason we don't "cure" Type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise, but "reverse" it. It sounds like a small thing, but in reality it places our focus in the wrong direction. America spends too much time and money trying to recreate natural things into some drug instead of encouraging personal responsibility. Personal responsibility has become something America doesn't even believe in anymore. We are constantly being told that we need to take this pill for this pain and that pill for that one, and most of the time the side effects are worse that the thing we started taking the pill for in the first place. My sister worked in a doctor's office for many years and the way our drug companies function is deplorable. If any other group did what they do, we would accuse them of buying off people. Why the drug companies get by with it is beyond me. We are very lucky to have a wonderful pharmacist. The doctors have no idea what kind of side effects the drug they are giving you even has. You better have a GREAT pharmacist these days.
We as republicans need to focus on this issue. I can't think of one family I know that is not dealing with some type of chronic illness, or cancer. Not one. It isn't about the cost for me, it is about the quality. We keep being told that we have the best Healthcare system in the world, but it isn't true. We do have the best Urgent Care system in the world, but our Health in America is deteriorating rapidly. People roll their eyes at me when I talk about ways other than drugs to improve your health. To me that is so sad. We have brainwashed a whole generation of people to believe that only a drug can make you feel better or help you with your aches and pains. It was not what the drug companies started out to do, but they where just given so much power in the beginning that it just kind of happened. I have no problem with them doing what they are doing, they are trying to make money just like every other company out there. But putting the cure to Type 1 diabetes in the hands of people that make Billions of dollars on selling products managing this disease is Stupid.
As a republican party we need to challenge our doctors to open their minds again. Not to focus just on what new drug in out the market, but what they can do to improve the overall health of our nation. It has to start in the classrooms of our medical schools. We need to create grants that encourage medical institutions to think outside the drug box, and encourage the return to finding those things God gave us to help us deal with the impact this world has on our human bodies. We need to inspire innovation in the medical field like we do in the energy field. If we can run our cars on corn, why are we filling our bodies with chemicals? It just doesn't make since. It is as backwards as you can get.
I am praying for our nation. I am praying that our leader will wake up and realize how upside we have become. That common since will begin to return to our leadership. Thank you Mike for running and awaking a generation that hasn't understood what was happening until you came along. It isn't going to happen overnight, but we are here. We are working little by little to return our country to the great nation it once was. We are still your five stones and you aren't hearing from us like you were before because we are busy doing what you inspired us to do.

American flag disappears from Obama campaign jet
Candidate's trademark 'O' replaces stars and stripes

As part of a month-long aircraft makeover, a painted American flag was removed from the tail of Sen. Barack Obama's official campaign airplane and was replaced with the presidential candidate's trademark "O" symbol. The refurbished 757 was unveiled to members of the news media today, 41 of whom boarded the craft and took off to meet Obama in Amman, Jordan, where the presidential candidate will stop as part of a Middle Eastern and European tour.
Obama traveled to the Mideast earlier this week on board a separate airplane.
Fox News blogger Bonny Kapp, traveling on Obama's new airplane, reported:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php? ... geId=70236"The North American jet that flew Obama and his traveling crew around for much of the primary season was refurbished with new seats and power for each passenger a must on the campaign trail. And the plane that once had an American flag on its tail now sports the Obama 'O.'"
Obama's 'O' symbol is red, white and blue.
Most official U.S. government aircraft, including Air Force One, have U.S. flags on their tails.
Both Fox News and the Chicago Sun-Times posted pictures of the Obama campaign's redressed airplane, which does not have an American flag or any other U.S. national symbols on the section that sports the airplane door from which Obama and his team will enter and exit.
The airplane boasts Obama's anthem, "Change We Can Believe In" and the candidate’s website address.

The aircraft also has required identification numbers and a U.S. flag to identify the nationality of the aircraft.According to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Lynn Sweet, the refurbished Obama aircraft features a "first class" section for the candidate and his closest advisors; several "business class" seats, and a large coach section, usually meant for the traveling press corps.
Sweet reported fruit and cheese platters greeted reporters on board the flight. Dinner options offered were beef medallions, baked tilapia or eggplant parmesan.
She wrote the Obama campaign provided overnight kits for the flight that include toothbrush, mouthwash, socks, Neutrogena body lotion and lip moisturizer, Scope mouthwash, ear plugs and a blindfold for sleeping.

Given recent events in Afghanistan, I believe we should be deploying more troops there, where American casualties are rising. We can ill afford al Qaida and the Taliban to once again regain major parts of Afghanistan and rebuild training camps. Since things are going so well in Iraq and all signs seem to point to a gradual withdrawal, it seems obvious where the needed troops will come from for Afghanistan. I think Republicans are missing a major issue if they fail to recognize and act on the problems occurring in Afghanistan.
It seems that national security and our efforts in Afghanistan has been reduced to one of minor importance these days, and that concerns me. Are we still going after Osama bin Laden, or do we wait for the next attack to remember why we've sent soldiers to that region of the world?

UPCOMING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The following data, taken from the public record, reveals each Presidential Candidate's proposed TAX Plan, if elected. Each taxpayer should become more informed before the November-08 General Election......or be willing to pay the tariff of ignorance, once taxes are enacted.
________________________________DATA ON TAXES
Proposed changes in taxes after the 2008 General election:CAPITAL GAINS TAX
MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples). McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales.
How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.DIVIDEND TAX
MCCAIN 15% (no change)OBAMA 39.6%
How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.'INCOME TAX
MCCAIN (no changes)
Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $12,500
Single making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K - tax $18,750
Married making 125K - tax $31,250
OBAMA (reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K - tax $8,400
Single making 50K - tax $14,000
Single making 75K - tax $23,250
Married making 60K - tax $16,800
Married making 75K - tax $21,000
Married making 125K - tax $38,750
Under Obama, your taxes could almost double!INHERITANCE TAX
MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax
Many families have lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will only lose them to these taxes.NEW TAXES PROPOSED BY OBAMA
New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet
New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)
New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)
New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least....
New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!! -

A Trucker’s Perspective to Sen. McCain:
You’ve got a Great Opportunity This Week!!7-21-08
Dear Senator McCain,
This week, in my opinion, offers you a great opportunity at this crucial time during the 2008 Presidential campaign!
While Senator Obama tries to obtain foreign policy experience in the Middle East, and has all three of the public air waves' major network anchors with him to cover this "historic" event...a thought came to me.
What if you held a news conference, here at home and announced some "major" news yourself-and thereby forcing Senator Obama to interrupt his foreign policy "tour" and respond directly to your announcement?
First, Senator Obama has said: "I will debate Senator McCain anytime, anyplace, anywhere...Let's do it"!
Yet, when you announced the idea of a "Lincoln-Douglas townhall" type debate, just you and him on stage asking each other questions and debating the real issues that are facing our Country...Senator Obama wanted to do one on our 4th of July!!! He knew most all Americans would be too busy with our families in celebrating our Country's Independence Day and not able to watch the debate.
Take control of this election process and challenge Senator Obama to prove to the American people his worthiness, intelligence and experience to be our next Commander in Chief!
Come out and announce the schedule of four (4) such debates; 1.) The Economy and Taxes 2.) Energy Policies 3.) The War on Terrorism/National Security, and 4.) Education/Healthcare/Immigration and your vision of our Country's future.
Ask four universities to host these debates on their campuses and invite all of the media networks to cover these debates. Set the locations, times (I'd prefer Sunday nights in August...no football games will be on TV yet) and the topics to be debated.
Stop negotiating with Obama's campaign about these debates!!!
It's obvious to me that he's afraid to debate you one on one...with no scripted questions and answers coming from liberally-biased media moderators. His campaign is deathly afraid of this format and knows that Senator Obama does not have enough experience or worldly knowledge of the facts and that he can't, ..."think quickly and then respond ‘Presidentially’ on his feet".
If the Obama campaign announces that they can't make the places and times you set...Go ahead and have the debates anyway!!!
Respond by telling the American people that Senator Obama is not willing to meet you anytime, anyplace, anywhere...like he has said, but you are willing to show up and take questions from the audience with an empty stool and microphone on the stage next to you, readily available for Senator Obama if he's willing to change his "busy" schedule and show up!!!
Show us, the American people the real leadership skills you have demonstrated throughout your entire life and take charge of this Presidential Election!!!
Please give us four opportunities to see you and Senator Obama really debate the real issues the American people want to hear about.
We do not want to watch those boring, time-monitored, answered and rebutted, formatted Presidential debates of the past few elections.
We want and need to watch these new and spontaneous type of debates...so we can vote for the best candidate to lead our country at such a crucial time in our Country's history, who through these debates will prove to be... you!!!
Sincerely and respectfully submitted to you for your consideration,
Trucker Randy Bishop

Mike, Janet and Team Huckpac,
The solution to ease our crisis in fuel prices was solved back in the mid 90's by GM. They invested over a Billion dollars to develop an absolutely efficient 100% electric car, the EV-1. It recharged on a regular household outlet and went 120 miles on a single charge. This is far more than the average American's commute to work each day. It was revolutionary in design and performance. They were leased all over Southern CA and many stars in Hollywood fell in love with them. They went 0-60 in just 8 seconds and had a top speed of over 150 miles an hour. The sales price was going to be between $33,000 - $43,000. There was only one moving part which meant the only regular maintenance required was rotating the tires!
A combination of our government and special interests caused GM to terminate everyone's leases and never make them available for sale. They were returned and all were destroyed except for one of the generation 1 models of the EV-1 which was being displayed at the Smithsonian Institute until December of last year.
We MUST do a combination of demanding that GM or EXXON which is rumored to now own the patent, BRING back this car and put it back into production immediately! In addition, GM and other automakers produce Natural Gas-powered vehicles for other countries. Why must ONLY America be held hostage to foreign oil? We are losing our homes while other countries are being smart and moving on to alternatives that our own country has developed and created many years ago. This story needs to be told and we must let our voices be heard. A new website will be launching this weekend to inform, educate, inspire and call Americans to ACTION to help our country get moving back in the right direction. www.ChoicesForAmerica.com
As far as Tax Reform, WE NEED the Fair Tax!!!!!!!! If you study this plan and all of its ramifications, it would completely revolutionize our nation. In addition to the economic positive impact, it would also unbridal our church leaders. No more IRS, no more silencing of our Judeo-Christian leaders. I believe this would unleash the power of the majority of our people to get our country back to the America that our Founding Fathers were so courageous in creating in the first place.
Thank You,Lori Stacey

With regard to Energy it is essential that we keep in mind that there is NO "quick fix" or "silver bullet." I believe we should invest in both fossil and renewable energies, yet have a realistic view of the big picture.
Yet, with all the current political blame, smoke screens, and money making schemes going on, one of the best things we can do is look at the NUMBERS because they are the cold, cold facts.
(1) According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) the U.S. gets a whoping 94% of the energy we consume from OIL, NATURAL GAS, COAL, and NUCLEAR combined.
Versus,
(2) According to the EIA the U.S. gets less, I repeat less, than 1% of the energy we consume from GEOTHERMAL, WIND, AND SOLAR combined.
What does this REALITY simply show us? It gives us a rough picture of which energies will take longer to come on line to help us off our 70% oil import addiction from countries like Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Russia.
For the sake of length, I will make my case with the least of the big five, nuclear. Nuclear in the U.S. provides only 8% of our energy needs. Compare this with France that got serious about energy needs after the 1973 OPEC Embargo. The French have cut oil import dependence from 75% to 50% because of their Nuclear Program alone. Now, if the French can do it, we can also cut our oil imports by 25% just in Nuclear alone. We can do more and quicker because we have much greater financial and natural resources.
Now, don't get me wrong I like Mr. T. Boone Pickens plan, it could work. But, he admitted in his own words that Wind in order to make a difference would take us to the 2030 year as stated on the C-SPAN video on his web site which showed him before the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee. He said he believed it could be quicker than what the government studies show, but I doubt it because of the above numbers. The amount of infrastructure and time to get us out of the Geo, Wind, Solar less than 1% energy position will take longer, much longer, than energy we will get from domestic drilling, coal to liquid, shale oil, natural gas, and nuclear options. I particular see huge potential in nuclear because of the tried and tested French example. The universal financial "Principle of Diversity" basically says "do not put all your eggs in one basket" that is what we have basically done by importing 70% of the oil we consume. It is now time to diversify in ALL energy sectors and be somewhat urgent and wise in how we deal with the reality of the current energy facts. Unfortunately, Congress and other extreme groups will do little about domestic oil, shale oil, natural gas, and nuclear and major ONLY on renewable energy which will take much longer to help our current situation.

2.. I would like to see the pro-life appealed
3.. The marriage Act is very important to me to limit to one woman and one woman
4.. Fair Tax and its time to stop talking bout these issues and get it done.. Its a flat out shame that some aren't listening to the American People.. It reall should not take them all day to do things.. 40 years for a engery plan... Please give us a break..

The only stumbling block to the FairTax are the corporate tax attorneys, estate planning attorneys, tax accountants, IRS agents and special interest lobbyists would all have to find other gainful employment.
As a legal secretary, I've worked for many of them. However, that's a small sacrifice compared to demolishing the economy and pushing the U.S. into an economic recession. Bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. would be a really good thing.
We could have quality control over our food and manufactured goods again. We should ask attorney and talk show radio host Neal Boortz if he has any sympathy for the thousands of attorneys who will have to practice a different area of law.
I can hardly wait to hear his answer! Can someone please call him on talk radio and report back to us what he says?

The two biggest issues I would like to see HuckPac push to the candidates are The FairTax Plan and dealing with illegal immigration and by that I mean enforcing the laws and NO AMNESTY of any kind!
The FairTax would easily revolutionize and move America forward by collecting taxes from Every person in America who buys goods! I see no drawbacks of any kind, and I have researched the plan quite thoroughly. -
TOGETHER WE STAND!!!
07/21/2008 04:09 PM
This would be my plan for energy.
*Please Note: This is a plan for our Mobile/Transpiration Energy that we import, NOT power grid energy which needs to be done with more solar, wind, hydro, Nuclear and other. ( I think it is two separate issues.)Now since we import 70% of our oil what we need to do is replace that 70% with stuff from here.
20% more Eternal from something other then corn
20% more from more oil drilling
30% more from shell ( I hear we have allot of this, if any other can't produce enough, could make it up with shell)
20% more from Liquefying Coal (We also have more of this then any other country and burns cleaner then oil when liquefied )Now that adds up to 90% more, That's 20% more then we need!!! Plus by some going to electric and hybrid cars we may end up with more surplus then that, so why for the surplus, the surplus is needed to keep the market from getting nerves. But what do we do with the surplus? we sell the surplus until / IF we need it, we can also export the surplus oil to China / other, to help pay down our debt, Hey oil is one thing we know they want. and we need to get out of debt to help our Dollar value and economy. Over time decrease our dependency on Fossil fuel, Technology WILL come along, just look what all has happen in the last 100 years, 50yrs from now we may have a whole new fuel that has never be thought of.
By doing This it would stop all the billions of dollars we send over seas for Oil and keep it here where we need it.We set a time table of 5 to 8yrs to complete this.
We make it easy for and encourage knew start up companies to get involved in energy.Note: they are evidently allot of places being built to make ethanol. One is being built in upstate South Carolina that uses Barley instead of corn, I don't know that much about Barley but they say it is manly a winter crop and will not effect food supply, plus the lower part of the state has plenty of fields to grow since up until China took over the textile industry there was cotton fields everywhere in the lower part, so plenty of areas to grow here without effecting Beer or anything else they use barley for.
A little about the Coal to fuel, Last summer I had to go up to Virginia the part that's close to the Kentucky border, Man they have coal mines everywhere however they look to be in real bad need of good paying jobs up there, it was like stepping back in time compared to where I live.
I would love to see a day when they and any other place in USA with coal/ shell and oil was living large like the oil empires over sea are doing today. After all, jobs and money in our hands are what keeps our economy going and creates more jobs and on and on.
Africa already leads in Coal to liquid technology and has said they will help us with this. They also have Jets that run on it that has been proven to burn cleaner.
WE COULD TELL OPEC THEY CAN KEEP THERE OIL!!!!Also realize that Global warming is Not caused by Man, The melting glaciers are showing large tree stumps where forest once stood. Why was it warn enough 7000yrs ago for large forest with large tree to grow? I would hate to see after we spent $$$ at the cost of our economy for this cause and then a very large volcano erupt and pollute the atmosphere more then man ever has. Don't get me wrong, I think pollution is bad however it needs to be done in a way that does not put the brakes on our economy.
On TAXES we need the Fair Tax period.

I have come up with a design for a new type of nuclear reactor that would use nuclear waste as fuel without reprossessing it. I only need an energy company to fund and implement the project and regulators to clear the way for implementation. Even if this reactor is a dead end, which I doubt, the bottom line is we need fast reactors yesterday. Thermal neutron lightwater reactors are the SUVs of nuclear power plants- grossly inefficient with their fuel.
The Fair Tax is obviously needed in order to curb spending. Politicians won't curb spending so long as they can hide the cost.
Education- kill the teachers union, by legislative fiat if necessary. Let successful professionals and military officers teach courses relavent to their training.

I just wrote the little pieces on education and energy. I forgot to include that my name is Tim Nissen from Anaheim.
Also I should clarify that my education proposal is not rigid. If someone believes that certain subjects such as history and art simply cannot be dispensed with in the public education system then, in order to meet the overall vision of my program, they would have to create a curriculum which was liberated from philosophical, religious and moral ideas which create a stumbling block to a large segment of the students and parents. Note, that it is usually the conservatives and Christians which are offended and thus we probably stand to benefit the most from this type of system.
