Rep. Young (Updated)

UPDATE:  I have been following the comments regarding Don Young today with interest. Your opinions are important to me and our team, so having read another comment just now asking for an explanation of our endorsement, I wanted to make sure you heard from me directly.

Don Young has been a consistent pro-family, pro-life vote in the Congress.  Don also endorsed my campaign and stood by me in the public arena defending my record from false attacks when other members of Congress wouldn't be seen with me. I don't expect everyone to agree with each endorsement we make. I am thankful that we are able to talk about our differences openly and respectfully. Thank you for your comments.

-Mike Huckabee

Representative Don Young is running for re-election in Alaska.

A strong conservative Don Young’s stance on the issues makes him a Huck PAC endorsed candidate.

Don Young has focused on:

1.  Making America energy independent.

2.  Improving our nation’s infrastructure.

3.  A strong military and defense.

He currently serves as the ranking member on the Resources Committee.

We urge you to make a contribution in support of his campaign here.

If you live in Alaska we encourage you to volunteer for his campaign here.

Visit his website here, today.

“Don is one of the few members of Congress to totally understand the critical state of our nation’s infrastructure and when I was a Governor and Chairman of the National Governors Association, he was one of the few members of Congress who fully recognized the direct link between infrastructure and job creation and economic development.  I consider him a personal friend and have enjoyed duck hunting with him, but I didn’t enjoy the fact that he is such a marksman that he put the rest of us to shame” Huckabee said.

“I am at the same time humbled, thrilled, and deeply appreciative of Governor Mike Huckabee's endorsement.  The Governor is a true conservative who has motivated and inspired many Americans, including myself, by standing for what is good about and good for our nation.  I look forward to continuing to team with Mike and Huck PAC in supporting those same issues that resonate with Alaskans -- life and the preservation of individual liberty, our families and their security, a strong national defense, and less government.” Young said.

Oh my! I've lived in Alaska for the last 23 years and Sean Parnell is a FAR better candidate. I knew him when I was a staffer in the Alaska Legislature and he was a state senator. He is conservative, holds Christian values, pro-life, and on and on it goes. His staff was loyal to him too - wonder if you can say that about Young (if you really want to know the true character of a person, ask a staffer!). I can't say enough good about Parnell. Young, on the other hand, is pompous, arrogant, spends our tax dollars wastefully and has been in Congress far too long. If you just want pro-life, either will be there (Sean's state record is pro-life too) but if you want friendly, fiscal conservative and workable, then Parnell's your only choice. Please reconsider.

By the way, Parnell isn't living under a cloud of investigations either.

    Young Under Investigation

The above bothered me, not just what it had to say about Don Young, but the chest-thumping about being right about "liberal" Huckabee. You know me, though...very little out there I'm willing to take on the word of the media, so I did some digging.

The more I see the more concern I have that for the sake of giving back, HuckPAC has been hitched to a rogue animal, here.

He may vote like a conservative, but no amount of votes for this that and the other thing conservatives love can make up or cover for someone who clearly has some serious issues. He may be exhonerated, but on the face of it, this looks like a terrible move.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell is a solid social and fiscal conservative. He's shown his dedication through his steadfast public service for Alaskans.

Rep. Young, on the other hand, has compromised his principles, wastefully spent and appropriated billions of dollars, and has had problems with corruption that only the Dems should have (and would make even them blush). Plus, polls show Young losing badly to the Democratic challenger, Ethan Berkowitz (and Parnell winning strongly). We cannot and must not lose this seat!

Sean Parnell is the clear conservative choice. Please, if you can, make a donation to his campaign and let's bring true conservatism back to the GOP.

Gov. Huckabee, you are dead-wrong on this one.

    Gov. Huck,
Thank you for supporting Don Young. most of you don't know Don - I do. he's a great man that cares deeply for Alaskans and is always working to better the lives of his constituents and the Great State, and sharing what natural resources Alaska has with the rest of America.

While some of you mention the so-called Bridge to Nowhere, you ought to look in the mirror and take notice that you are all beneficiaries of 'pork' whether you want to admit it or not.

What does it take exactly for the lower 48 to deem it a "Bridge to Somewhere"??? How many people have to be part of the equation there before the it's not a 'bridge to nowhere' ?? it's totally a misleading name for the project and I resent the negativity that has come down on my State because of Don's (and the 2 Senators from AK's) good work.

Shame on all of you for badmouthing a true American, a true conservative, and a truly respectable man.

    Governor Huckabee,

I wholeheartedly supported your campaign for the Republican nomination and continue to support you in your endeavors. I believe your voice is a voice the Republican party needs to have.

Unfortunately and while I understand the value of loyalty , endorsing Don Young with his ethical baggage and his addiction to earmarks does not lend itself well either to your message and cause or to the Republican party.

    God bless you.

Stupid move on this one Huck.

As someone put below, you're just returning the favor for him standing up to you, but do you know what he said to his opponent's wife this past March??? Documented and I quote:

"I'm looking forward to kicking your husband's ass"

You blew your reputation on this...and a reported 70% of Alaskans disagree with you (www.adn.com/ear).

For Huckabee to support someone who has a $1M legal bill trying to defend all of his questionable deals, and tried to name one of the "Bridges to Nowhere" after himself, you obviously didn't do your homework on this one.

    Stupid stupid stupid.

Adam Graham: Where are you getting the 900K figure? Admittedly it is only as of January, but the figure I'm seeing is 250K. Still not good, but a far cry from nearly a million dollars.

    Me again Mike!

Thank you for taking time to respond. The context is very helpful. Anyone who had the insight and boldness to stand up for you when others would not can't be all 'bad'

In this case it would apear that the 'principle' of standing by a friend who stood by you, trumps differences of political opinion on some matters.

Hopefully Mr. Young has learned the difficult lessons from past errors in judgement and could be a stronger, even more consistently conservative leader going forward if re-elected.

Honestly, my concern was less about Rep Young, and more about how this endorsement could be used against you by detractors.

Since Young stood up to detractors on your behalf, I'm guessing its only fair to return the favor.

In the long term though.. I guess we just want to be assured that the PAC will really be about making a difference and overturning the status quo of disfunctional Washington.

That will be hard to do if we are afraid to take risks and support those who may want to challenge imcumbents who have not done their job satisfactorily.

Hopefully the PAC will endeavor to support candidates who truly represent those things that we are passionate about.. the things your campaign stirredto life in us again.

Again, thank you for communicating.. and God Bless

  • Tyger

    06/25/2008 07:02 PM

Wow...there's a fine line between passionate and rude...I think some people may want to rethink where it is. His legal problems are troubling, but singling him out for the Bridge to Nowhere fiasco is unfair. Besides, it seems more of the blame should fall to Ted Stevens, acting like a spoiled 5 year old and threatening to leave congress if the funding were removed.

    Governor:

This is the one endorsement I am iffy on, I agree that Rep Young has had a long and distinguished career. However, I am concerned about some of his recent history. I do appreciate you however standing with someone who stood by you

    Sorry Mike,

I overreacted and I shouldn't write anything without your explanation. I trust your judgment. The last time I didn't trust your judgment I was wrong (The Chuck Norris Ad) ended up as an awesome way for people to get to your site! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I think we should trust Mr Huckabee .

Shame on you all ! Please ...PLEASE< PLEASE WE NEED TO SHOW som more respect ....respect in your posts for the governor !

Not you, JD ! You have always shown finesse, and a sense of propriety !

I have a Book of Willard Mitt Romney (oh 'scratch' the middle name ---Censored in election 08 )*)...and I have placed a Swedish fish over his mouth like a gag (a candy over his mouth---shades of: Silence of the Shams). On my other side, I have my copy of April 2008 Charisma Mag in plastic, and am using it as MY Huck-Mouse Pad.
I carry my plast-a-scened mag facing forward so every one can see, wherever I go.

Also we have placed the Barock O book under the chair , in plain view and offer a water pistol to those waiting in line for a chance!

    06/25/2008 02:17 PM

Mike, I don't know if this was the best endorsement. Could you please reconsider, or at least give us an explanation as to why you chose Rep. Young over Lt Governor Parnell?

  • clover_dave

    06/25/2008 01:34 PM

Mike, I am a long time supporter, and I am not happy about this endorsement.

Young is deep in Pork, he is wasting Tax dollars on projects, Bridge to NoWhere, he represents the worse of the Pork Spenders.

What about Sean Parnell - Lt. Gov. Alaska running for Congress? He is a great candidate, did you not consider him?

How can I urge people to donate to Huck PAC when you will be backing Young?

  • Tina P

    06/25/2008 12:58 PM

    Mike,

    I hope you're reading!

I still firmly believe that you would not sacrifice your principles for anybody's politics..or friendship.

I think that endorsing such a clearly controversial subject as the co-sponsor of the bridge to nowhere..and someone with skeletons in their legal closet, does more to hurt your credibility, than to help his.

I understand that, in many ways you have to pay your dues to the establishment by supporting some of their incumbents, as supporting republican challengers could be seen as throwing in a 'third party candidate' who could siphon GOP votes and give the dems a win..

But it may be better at times to not endorse at all, than to endorse someone with more cons than pros.

At least he's for the Fair Tax! maybe that is why you thought he would resonate well with us.

Remember that we are not one issue voters..so our pac candidates should be able to pass the well rounded issues test.

    God Bless..

Still hoping to call you Veep.

  • Steve S.

    06/25/2008 09:52 AM

This the best HuckPAC can come up with????

Making the case..........Sean Parnell - Lt. Gov. Alaska running for Congress
Don Young was a co-sponsor of the "Bridge to Nowhere" legislation

It turns out that the written instruction for Don Young's interns included directions to, basically, give free reins to certain lobbyists. From The Hill:
The guidelines designate several lobbyists as members of the “A Team.” Interns who answered the phone were instructed to let these lobbyists speak to any staff member requested. ...
Members of the so-called A Team include Rick Alcalde of Potomac Partners, Colin Chapman of Chapman Capitol Consulting Group, Randy DeLay of Public/Private Strategies Consult, Billy Lee Evans of Kessler & Associates Business Services, former Rep. Jay Dickey (R-Ark.) of JD Consulting, C.J. Zane of Blank Rome Government Relations and Jack Ferguson of Jack Ferguson Associates. Randy DeLay is former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s (R-Texas) brother.
TPM Muckraker, which has the original documents, notes that Rick Alcade is also "the lobbyist on the notorious Coconut Road earmark."
Great. Let's please get rid of this guy.
Go help Sean Parnell and get crooks like Don Young out of office.
